I actually just recently watched this show a couple of months ago and loved it! I went through serious withdrawals when it ended.

2021-08-05 01:35:41 +0000 UTCyaaaayyyyy! i've been waiting for this show to be covered by more people. it's so good! to quickly answer a couple of your questions, brian: --yes, the show's set in northern ireland in the 90s, during a violent political conflict referred to in the show and elsewhere as "The Troubles." i am in no way an expert on The Troubles, so i'll leave it to others and/or professor google to offer in-depth comments on the subject. (i do remember hearing from time to time about specific incidents - bombings and skirmishes - that were covered on u.s. news shows when i was a kid during the 80s and 90s.) also, the cranberries' zombie (song and video) is about The Troubles. --it was mentioned a couple times, in quick passing, that james was attending the girls' school under a special dispensation because of concerns for his safety if he went to the boys' school, because "he's english." everyone expected he'd be beaten up for that.
