This show is set in 1990s Northern Ireland. You may notice the references to Pulp Fiction and M. Culkin divorcing his parents. This was towards the end of "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland. It was a decades long (60s to1998) political conflict between the country of Ireland, and the UK, which Northern Ireland is a part of. Ireland is predominantly Catholic, and the UK is Protestant. In Northern Ireland there are fair populations of both. For decades, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and opposing Protestant groups committed acts of terrorism back and forth. The Irish faction wanted (wants) a united Ireland. The Protestant population want to remain in the UK because they feel they would be oppressed if they were made part of Ireland. (The Catholics feel discriminated against by the UK). I'm really oversimplifying things and may be off in some of the details, but that's the gist. Things have been fairly stable there since the late 90s, but there have been a few flare ups since Brexit, having to do with import laws and a toughening of border restrictions because the UK is no longer part of the European Union. That's some context for you. So, the reason that James is in the girls school is that being English, they thought he would be bullied and beat up at the Catholic boy's school. They mentioned in the first episode that his mother brought him up in England after going there to get an abortion (which was illegal in Ireland until 2018, believe it or not) and of course, didn't go through with it. She then went back to England and left him with his cousins. Orla and Erin are cousins and live with Erin's two parents, Orla's flighty mother and their mutual grandfather. One of the big sources of humor in the show is the matter of fact way that everyone (except James) reacts to things like bomb threats, soldiers everywhere, etc. After living with constant terrorist attacks for 30 years, they've become somewhat immune to smaller incidents that don't have casualties.
