2021-08-09 03:06:33 +0000 UTCI understand why Mariana feels the way she does though I don't necessarily agree with her. I think she's afraid of losing her best friend and not just spending time together but of the changes to their friendship. It would be awkward to talk about her brother or things they used to do now that Lexi is dating him. Plus, she might lose her for good if they ever broke up. No matter how good a friendship is, I don't think Lexi would appreciate seeing and hanging out with her ex every time she wanted to see her best friend or vise versa for Jesus. I don't think Mariana would be this upset if it was any other friend of hers, but Lexi is like a sister to her and someone as important to her as Jesus.

2021-08-06 20:00:07 +0000 UTCAs a bi-racial person myself, I understand where Lena is coming from completely. Growing up, I faced racism from both sides of friends and family. No matter how light you are, you aren't white enough, and no matter how dark you are, you aren't black enough. Throughout my life, school was the worst experience of mine. I was bullied physically and verbally by both races for the color of my skin and the way I looked. I love seeing Lena's story throughout this show because it's similar to mine. Thankfully, my mother took any complaints or concerns I had with positivity, always making them feel valid and understood. Most people on tv or movies who are half-black and half-white don't talk about their experiences in the world or how they can be/are discriminated against by people who are supposed to love, support, and cherish them (I think that's the hardest thing to deal with.) Yes, everybody has different experiences, but the issue Lena's mother has is that she trumps her own experiences over that of her daughter without truly understanding what it's like for her. She automatically assumes everything is naturally easy or less of a burden without taking the time to listen.

2021-08-06 19:58:55 +0000 UTCHonestly, Lena's mom is completely right. Being biracial is simply different from being Black, especially being a dark-skinned woman. I feel like a lot of shows used to tiptoe around these conversations and villainize dark-skinned black women for rightfully speaking up about colorism within the black community. Biracial people have their own struggles, I realize, but that is more interpersonal than institutional. The part where I think it diverges into uncomfortable territory, is that it seems she's made her daughter feel guilty about being biracial, when she's the one who had a child with a white man. If she behaved this way all the way through Lena's childhood, I can honestly see how Lena feels that way, as if her mother has always resented her. It's a tough space to be in. I think Mariana was mostly upset that she will no longer have someone in her corner. As you can see, she was upset with Lexi when she didn't defend her with him. If Lexi is going to see her brother, she might feel that she would be losing her in that way.
