2022-01-01 02:20:35 +0000 UTCI’m sorry if others have brought this up but I’m not seeing the previous episode anywhere. It goes straight from 21 to this one so I was wondering why that is? Thanks!

2021-10-16 00:31:30 +0000 UTCYeah, it was mentioned. I also think he remembers during the reaction. It was funny, though, him being confused by it.

2021-08-13 01:57:22 +0000 UTCSo I stopped reading the comments part way through, so if someone said this I’m sorry but you seemed confused about Alaric. He died as a vampire with OG vampire status. So that’s why he was able to speed off quickly and blow himself up

2021-08-12 09:49:42 +0000 UTCIndeed. There's so many antebellum celebrations on that show. There's one where they literally wear confederate garb for the parade. Tring to remember which that one was. And of course, also Miss Mystic Falls.
Fly on the Wall
2021-08-07 18:42:16 +0000 UTCThank you. I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees it this way. I tried to mention the demographic thing, too, because I think Virginia being a southern antebellum town with Confederate celebrations and whatnot would of course skew more white in population density. If I had to make an educated guess, my guess would be around 12-15% BLPOC. This same team nailed the representation when they moved the spinoff to a town that is clearly quite diverse in real life so I think this shows it wasn't purely black and white so to speak on representation. Of course there's always room for improvement, however. And as far being tortured, ding ding. Just think about Elena has been through this season alone? I'd say she probably suffered the most this particular year I would think. Caroline is probably a LITERAL torture magnet. She was tortured by her boyfriend's wolfpack, and by her own father at one point. Her own flesh and goddamn blood. And we know the fun's not about to be dialed back for any of our characters. I said shield, but plot armor certainly works, too. I'm not sure what they could have done with Bonnie considering she's the witch and the character meant to be in the thick of things. I would certainly not want to sacrifice creatively for a character in exchange for giving them more security because they cast a POC in the role. Would seem rather limiting.

2021-08-07 18:34:57 +0000 UTCSo I'm with Brandon on the racial issue somewhat, but then again...I'm not a poc so I probably don't get an opinion. I'm open to other sides and can appreciate how Bonnie was treat made people feel badly about it. I think a lot of people identified with Bonnie because she was the only poc, so when the writers essentially tortured her, it upset people. However, I think people are thinking with their emotions on that rather than logically. The writers tortured EVERY single character on this show. At one point, Steven himself even said they are always torturing Caroline (sometimes literally). Elena obviously is put through a ton of stuff. What a lot of people seem to want today is for the writers to have given Bonnie some HEAVY plot armor so that she was the only one not tortured. In other words, they want her to be treated differently because she's a poc. That's the only thing I can think, because otherwise I'm not sure what would make people happy. Imagine if they'd cast Kat as either Elena or Caroline. People still wouldn't have been happy. I also have a hard time wrapping my head around what casting should do today. Virginia (where this is supposed to be located) in small towns has a majority white population. So the casting would be pretty accurate on TVD. So are casting directors supposed to cast diversity into areas that don't have it? So if they do a show set in Vermont, should they have a diverse cast? Do we go with accuracy or diversity just for the sake of diversity? They obviously cast a much for diverse cast for The Originals because it makes sense. It's set in New Orleans, which is a much more diverse location. For that matter, if we are casting a movie about Native Americans, should we start casting different races to play the Native Americans? I'm being a bit sarcastic with that one, because obviously, that would be wrong. However, that seems to be what people want today. If feels like we've left reality at times and now we are just making stuff up just to have something to be angry about these days.

2021-08-07 18:27:21 +0000 UTCI hope you have emails turned on because I typed up a long and detailed response to have this convo with you and it’s gone for some reason. If you do have emails turned on, you should have the response in your email. Edit: Seeing as I don’t know if you got the email that would have shown my original comment to you or not, I will leave you with this. I appreciate the manner in which you conducted this response to me. It was more understanding and respectful and I want to say thank you. It means a lot to me. I also want to say your interpretation is perfectly valid and I appreciate again that you at least see where I was coming from. I just want to say my own point of contention was I didn’t feel the writers were purposefully, intentionally and maliciously with forethought setting out to mistreat the Bonnie character and don’t believe that was their aim or endgame. So it appears we at least have some middle ground there as I don’t even even fully disagree there might have been someone accidental racial insensitivity with the overall portrayal of representation on that show. I think we definitely can agree in part on that. With that I want to wish you a splendid day. Thank you.

2021-08-07 13:15:51 +0000 UTCI see I wasn’t wrong for at least one person, lol.
Fly on the Wall
2021-08-07 12:53:08 +0000 UTCIs it possible due to not knowing any better that they were accidentally racially insensitive, possibly. For sure. That’s a perfectly valid interpretation to have for some. I don’t entirely agree. I do want to stress entirely. There’s always going to be margin for bias. At least when it comes specifically to the Bonnie character. My whole issue was people want to say the writers intentionally and maliciously mistreated the Bonnie character on purpose. That she didn’t like Bonnie and would have fired her if not for Ian. Which I’ve never seen anything credible to support. I feel as though the easiest way to see how a writer feels about a character is to examine the world the writers create around that character. Because they control the thoughts and actions of that entire universe and in the case of Bonnie Bennett is adored by basically everyone in that story. The idea that Julie Plec with forethought mistreated Bonnie just doesn’t seem to be the case for me. I feel also though people conflate does my character get to be the happiest character on the show with being mistreated from a writing standpoint. I just don’t agree. Is clueless better than being ignorant? I don’t know, you go in to call the writers ignorant so I don’t know, lol. I feel as though ignoring intention is problematic as I think it means a lot for when dissecting things as serious as racism is concerned. I don’t think racist should used if unknowingly racially insensitive is more what you mean. But, that’s just my perspective. I guess for me it comes down you say they saw an issue and fixed it with the other shows, but I don’t think that’s the case. Maybe in Legacies, but The Originals was cast and written and directed exactly halfway through The Vampire Diaries run. At this exact point in the show we’re reacting to, even. So I don’t think it’s a case of them learning. I just think people don’t realize they were making sure to be more respectful to adhere to the more diverse New Orleans. Virginia was smack dab in the good old boys backyard. I mentioned this in another comment, but Mystic Falls is full of Confederate and antebellum celebration. I think for me the key is do you think if Bonnie, who had been written as a white redheaded witch in the books for decades before Julie Plec got her hands on the rights, had been cast as a redheaded white actress, would the writing be any different? I don’t feel as though that would be the case. For me, Bonnie is written as the empathetic witch character designed to be just that. What I feel was her biggest crime was being lazy with that character, which yes, was probably racially insensitive if it did indeed get too close to the magical negro stereotype, but also at the same time I think the white characters rallied and sacrificed for her, too. Just not as deeply I guess. Julie probably shouldn’t have relied on that witch character so much to save everyone. I guess my final question is let’s say for a minute that they always intended on this character being this way, and I get you probably disagree, but humor me for a minute, what would you do when you cast Kat Graham? Do you change the character you had already preconceived in your head and how would you change it without ruining the basic storylines you have in mind? I’m going to be honest, I wouldn’t mind Bonnie being a bit happier overall, and getting some stuff like that, sure, but I love Bonnie Bennett as is, and I can’t imagine TVD without any of her major storyline “sacrifices.” Most of them are huge tent poles in the TVD lore and it would be so different without them in my opinion. Moving off the Bonnie Bennett of it all, I’m sure you could say they mistreated the minority characters, but do you think they treated them especially worse than the equally disposable white ones that came along as well? Weren’t all the guests immediately expendable? I feel as though the biggest problem that makes this look so bad is Julie was such an equal opportunity caster in the first place. Compared to some other supernatural shows from before TVD, there’s a pretty large list of minority characters on TVD roster in general. So I kind of feel their intentions to dispatch basically all guest characters and their progressive hiring kind of created an unintentional problem. I don’t think they ever intended on making any of them permanent characters, though, even if they had been white actors. So I’m not entirely sure how the problem of killing off characters in general as was their creative predilection could have been fixed? Is the solution to not kill off as many characters because that doesn’t feel creatively satisfying or would it have just been better to hire another POC on the main cast? Because I don’t feel Originals changed how it treats guest characters, just has more POC on the main cast. I’d probably be willing to lose Matt or Tyler, but I can’t imagine TVD without Ian, Nina, Candice, Paul, Matthew, Michael (hopefully Steven isn’t reading, but not too obvious of a spoiler anyway) or even Kat, but she’s a POC herself obviously. I have to say your response was much more respectful and I appreciate that for sure. I guess I don’t see why Nina and Kat aren’t apples and apples when comparing writing as I get there’s a difference in being hired and directed etc, but fair. We all have our ways of seeing things I respect that.

2021-08-07 12:46:54 +0000 UTCActually, though, remember that “monster” was also him shape shifting. He never actually looked like that, either. He was tricking Bonnie into believing she could see through his disguise. So he was able to trick two people at once. And without going into spoilers, the you know you know where he you knows the whole you know etc. I get what you’re saying. And how his powers work for sure, but what I think I mean is I don’t think it matters in the grand scheme of things to keep correcting him when he says shapeshifter. Yes, his powers have theoretical limits depending on how much blood he’s eaten for sure. But, in those scenes Steven’s talking about, he’s more or less accomplishing the same goal as say a “shapeshifter” if you mean like Mystic from X-Men or the species from Supernatural. Now I do agree he gets confused and he was definitely I think conflating doppelgängers with shapeshifters because he liked the shape shifting / illusions Silas did before the doppelgänger reveal. So I assume he is. I think the lore we’re about to dive into is really neat for sure and I can’t wait for it, but I always preferred to how he was portrayed in season 4 and it’ll be interesting to see his reaction to how different the upcoming dynamic is with him.

2021-08-07 11:39:45 +0000 UTCWell I hope you are still around cause I think I see the disconnect going on here and I hope all involved in this post read this with an open mind. In thinking about what you have all said and the things I’ve read/heard regarding the show and writing it is my contention that they didn’t PURPOSELY mistreat Bonnie due to some active racist predilections. It is my contention they are as clueless as Brandon is here on this issue. It’s more that they were ignorant of doing it in the first place, which for the record being aware of being racist or not does not make the act any less racist. I think the only way to CORRECT that form of ignorance is just like this. To talk about it. Make people aware and hope that everyone is open enough to take a step back. Calmly consider each other’s thoughts, admit where they are wrong and then take steps to FIX IT. Now we aren’t show writers and we can’t fix it but we can marvel at Televison as an ART form and like any good art it sparks conversation and sometimes those conversations are HARD and uncomfortable. Please don't take offense to that Brandon, honestly your arguments are sound if you are comparing apples to apples like you said with Bonnie and Elena. I think the disconnect is that you don’t understand that would mean they have to start out on equal footing in the first place and due to the color of their skin they simply do not. I think the writers didn’t get it, That this issue was so systemic up to this point that the writers just didn't recognize it. I'm not saying that's right or okay but we have a lot of SYSTEMIC racism issues in this country and sadly many steps need to be taken to remedy that. This show was crappy to their minority characters. Period. What I will say is they have been told that and I have seen the other two shows and they HAVE taken steps to improve that now that they are aware and while it doesn’t make up for anything it has to count for something. We have to give credit and positive reinforcement in order to move forward and it’s a bitter pill to swallow that those who have been crapped on have to clap like a seal in order to encourage people to not be racist but it’s a true testament to their character that they make that self sacrifice for the greater good, just like Bonnie. I hope you all take that in the kind and open spirit it was written. I am open to any comments and I won't get offended.

2021-08-07 02:47:40 +0000 UTC@Brandon K. Stretton He can't literally change his shape and make you see anyone. Silas uses a form of mind control as we have seen repeatedly now. He uses basically the same mind game the other vampires can but without touching. This power is limited though. We saw a ton of lore on this. Like when Shane explained that people would feed the well their blood and then they would see dead loved ones etc. Them feeding their blood to him made him stronger which made his mend messing power stronger. Him not being a shape shifter isn't a "technicality" it's a DETAIL. Here's a few more: In 4x19 (Netflix timestamp: 25:00 ish) that's Silas right there. 'Stefan' (Silas) wants Bonnie so he says "one of us should take her home" and Damon says "No she's safer here there's no way he can make everyone see the same thing. Well clearly Damon is right, Silas can't right here... he's STEFAN cause that's his true form and everyone is seeing Stefan. We also saw he often would slink off when he was making Bonnie or Klaus see him as Shane if someone else was coming. Why do that if he's a shapeshifter who could make everyone see the same thing? With two people watching he only seemed to be able to obfuscate his appearance and not actually take someone elses appearance, like with Bonnie and Caroline in Caroline's house. He turned into that monster looking thing to hide but was no longer in another person's form. This is all actually pretty important to the doppleganger land not quite a vampire lore they are about to dive into which is why I bothered to bring it up at all. They have told us everything I have said. Steven often gets incredibly confused with the lore cause he doesn't remember things so in order to understand stuff some times he needs some refreshers, I'm sure others could too.

2021-08-07 01:20:28 +0000 UTCI mean he still is. He can literally change his shape and make you see anyone. I think people get too caught up with the technicalities. I feel his problem was with him being a duplicate of Stefan as he liked that shape shifting stuff before this. He just hates when he’s one person. He hated him being Shane too when he thought that’s how he’d just look.

2021-08-06 16:12:40 +0000 UTCBonnie was one of the most beloved characters by the in-show characters and fans alike. That’s the reason she was always “suffering.” It’s a supernatural drama show. You need to be able to illicit a reaction. From both the other characters on the show, seriously the show bends over backwards to show how the entire cast of characters all adore Bonnie and would do anything for her, and the fans who all clearly love Bonnie and react exactly as they wanted us all to when bad things happen to her character. You need that character to be the emotional weight. She’s not the only character that gets tortured on this show, but Kat as an actor was probably the best when it came to portraying being hurt, being angry, being in pain, she just made you believe it when she was broken and crying for friends and family. Might even be the best actor on the show when it comes to exuding emotional through her face and with her body. And when you have those tools as a writer you use it. The show probably should have hired another POC on the main cast, but I don’t believe for a second they intentionally treated Bonnie poorly or that they did at all. They went out of their way to ensure you cared about her character so it meant something when she was put in these stories that saw her “suffer.” And she’s really not the only one. I mean, Elena has gone through the ringer. This season especially. I wouldn’t want to lose my entire bio family, my adopted family, my brother, my sort of step dad etc.

2021-08-06 15:55:55 +0000 UTCNo worries the majority of us pretty much agree with you. It really pisses me off. The lack of minorities and how Bonnie is dying or constantly suffering sucks. There are a lot of behind the scenes rumours and stuff but from interviews the actress Kat Graham seems very aware of how they treat the character. That’s all I can really say. I’m excited for the originals to begin next week!

2021-08-06 12:08:58 +0000 UTCThe Originals started at the same time as Vampire Diaries Season 5. Meaning after this finale both shows aired on the same night. Vampire Diaries starts before The Originals. As for Bonnie, I agree her being the only black character on the show and now dying is unfortunate. The Originals is better in that regard. As for Stefan/Silas: I think it was made this way for two reasons. One, they wanted to give the actor new stuff to do. Two, Silas might be able to impersonate Stefan and that sets them up to not immediately find Stefan bc of that.

2021-08-06 08:56:20 +0000 UTCI'm also with you on Bonnie being the only minority character and it sucks that they killed her. I disagree with your excitement for Jeremy. I find his character so boring and bland.

2021-08-06 08:18:49 +0000 UTC“Have you read what that trope is about? I'm not saying she can't be a witch. Of course that is a big part of what makes Bonnie who she is. I can't talk about more because of spoilers.” No, I get it and I feel you, but what I mean is besides the obvious magical powers part, her helping all the white characters is also because she's the witch. She's gonna be who they rely on to get out of most jams. I'd say it's lazy writing than anything. Because they did often go straight to "how can Bonnie fix this" and I'd also say more, but yeah spoilers. I will say without mentioning specifics, I think the other characters rally for her too. Quite a bit even, but again spoilers. It's hard sometimes having a convo in a reactor's comments, haha.

2021-08-06 06:54:03 +0000 UTCThe thing I’ll say about Bonnie is I get she’s a minority main cast member and I get being conflicted, but I don’t think that means she should get minority plot armor. You have to be able to do what you can with her creatively. Especially considering she’s the witch. There’s just certain things you have to be able to do with her and you can’t give her a shield because she’s a POC. Also, to the magical negro comment, I mean I guess, but she’s a witch. Would you rather she not have been a witch? That removes so much of what makes her Bonnie. TVD probably should have hired another POC, but who do you remove from the main cast to do that? I said in another comment I guess you could have left Jeremy dead and kept Tyler away instead of Klaus letting him come back. And maybe Matt leaves the show now that high school is over, perhaps. So maybe you could have swapped one of them out and brought in a new POC. I wouldn’t change much else about the cast, though, as it’s a greatly cast show imo. At least they got it right in Louisiana which is a far more diverse part of the country than Virginia, anyway. Same universe.

2021-08-06 06:50:56 +0000 UTCS5 of TVD and S1 of The Originals started on the same day and continued to air together every week. TVD aired first and The Originals came on right after. There's no gaps or breaks for either show where you need to watch more episodes of one over the other at any time.

2021-08-06 06:49:00 +0000 UTCI absolutely love the Silas reveal because I think, even four seasons into the show, that it deepens the lore in a really cool way. But alas, we'll see how you feel about it once we get to Season 5. I am curious about why you think that Silas being a shapeshifter is bad writing? Of course, we know at this point that he is not technically a shapeshifter, but can make people see what they want to see. You seemed to like how they used that last episode. In terms of it being another Katherine/Elena thing, that's actually a significant thought to have, and was done on purpose. I know you were probably thinking regarding having an "evil" person and a "good" person look the same, but trust me, the dynamics will be super different, especially now that Katherine is a human. But, can't spoil too much about Silas. It's so easy to forget that Ric technically became an Original vampire before he died, but yes, that is why he was able to do what he could do this episode. And trust me, you are not the only one who cheered for Klaroline with that one line. I have always been 100% with you whenever you talked about the lack of POC characters. Not to mention that they treat Bonnie like shit throughout the run of the show, always sacrificing herself for her white friends. She's literally the magical negro, it drives me crazy lol Finally, DELENA! I have been waiting for this moment for the LONGEST. Throughout all of the sire bond nonsense, this ending was clear as day for me, but am so happy that I see it CONFIRMED after all this time.

2021-08-06 06:29:49 +0000 UTCTVD has a big problem with killing off minorities and Bonnie is very obviously the “magical negro trope”. (Its a thing, look it up) The producer Julie Plec has been called out about it numerous times. You can enjoy the show and criticize it for these issues at the same time, so I appreciate you calling it out. Anyway this episode was good & I love the return of Klaus.

2021-08-06 05:24:06 +0000 UTCI actually think Originals kills just as many if not more minority guest characters. It's just they have more minority casted characters in general. TVD/TO just kills 90% of their quests. TVD probably should have hired another main POC, but without going into spoilers, I just can't imagine what actor we'd have cut to make that happen. Actually, I take that back. Leave Jeremy dead, his death was so impactful, and I actually think his resurrection kills it a bit so soon after. And I'd cut Tyler after S4. Bring in one or two POC to replace Jer and Tyler. But at least, there's Originals.

2021-08-06 05:07:36 +0000 UTCLocation is definitely a factor. There's definitely a difference between Virginia and Louisiana. I mean the main character of Mystic Falls were Confederates. Well, Damon was anyway. And the high school / town still has many antebellum town celebrations.

I personally loved the Silas doppleganger reveal and I find his story very interesting. I think if anyone gets mad at you for not liking that this show treats its minority characters badly. That's valid and as a black person, It still gets me so mad at the way this show treats Bonnie.

2021-08-06 04:12:18 +0000 UTCThere's a few crossovers that reveal stuff, but as long as he's watching both relatively at the same time, shouldn't matter too much.

2021-08-06 03:47:16 +0000 UTCYeah I didn't like the doppelgänger thing at all and like you said it just felt like Elena/Katherine all over and just seems lazy. Also loved klaus coming to save the day. Sorry this is gonna be a long comment. I couldn't find any good watch order links or any sources without spoilers but here is the order in which both shows aired in real time on tv: The Vampire Diaries Season 1 The Vampire Diaries Season 2 The Vampire Diaries Season 3 The Vampire Diaries Season 4 The Vampire Diaries S05E01 The Originals S01E01 The Originals S01E02 The Vampire Diaries S05E02 The Originals S01E03 The Vampire Diaries S05E03 The Originals S01E04 The Vampire Diaries S05E04 The Originals S01E05 The Vampire Diaries S05E05 The Originals S01E06 The Vampire Diaries S05E06 The Originals S01E07 The Vampire Diaries S05E07 The Vampire Diaries S05E08 The Originals S01E08 The Originals S01E09 The Vampire Diaries S05E09 The Vampire Diaries S05E10 The Originals S01E10 The Originals S01E11 The Vampire Diaries S05E11 The Originals S01E12 The Vampire Diaries S05E12 The Originals S01E13 The Vampire Diaries S05E13 The Originals S01E14 The Vampire Diaries S05E14 The Originals S01E15 The Vampire Diaries S05E15 The Originals S01E16 The Originals S01E17 The Vampire Diaries S05E16 The Vampire Diaries S05E17 The Originals S01E18 The Vampire Diaries S05E18 The Originals S01E19 The Vampire Diaries S05E19 The Originals S01E20 The Vampire Diaries S05E20 The Originals S01E21 The Vampire Diaries S05E21 The Originals S01E22 The Vampire Diaries S05E22 The Vampire Diaries S06E01 The Originals S02E01 The Vampire Diaries S06E02 The Originals S02E02 The Vampire Diaries S06E03 The Originals S02E03 The Vampire Diaries S06E04 The Originals S02E04 The Vampire Diaries S06E05 The Originals S02E05 The Vampire Diaries S06E06 The Originals S02E06 The Vampire Diaries S06E07 The Originals S02E07 The Vampire Diaries S06E08 The Originals S02E08 The Vampire Diaries S06E09 The Originals S02E09 The Vampire Diaries S06E10 The Originals S02E10 The Vampire Diaries S06E11 The Originals S02E11 The Vampire Diaries S06E12 The Originals S02E12 The Vampire Diaries S06E13 The Originals S02E13 The Vampire Diaries S06E14 The Originals S02E14 The Vampire Diaries S06E15 The Originals S02E15 The Vampire Diaries S06E16 The Originals S02E16 The Vampire Diaries S06E17 The Originals S02E17 The Originals S02E18 The Vampire Diaries S06E18 The Originals S02E19 The Vampire Diaries S06E19 The Originals S02E20 The Vampire Diaries S06E20 The Originals S02E21 The Vampire Diaries S06E21 The Originals S02E22 The Vampire Diaries S06E22 The Vampire Diaries S07E01 The Originals S03E01 The Vampire Diaries S07E02 The Originals S03E02 The Vampire Diaries S07E03 The Originals S03E03 The Vampire Diaries S07E04 The Originals S03E04 The Vampire Diaries S07E05 The Originals S03E05 The Vampire Diaries S07E06 The Originals S03E06 The Vampire Diaries S07E07 The Originals S03E07 The Vampire Diaries S07E08 The Originals S03E08 The Vampire Diaries S07E09 The Originals S03E09 The Vampire Diaries S07E10 The Originals S03E10 The Vampire Diaries S07E11 The Originals S03E11 The Vampire Diaries S07E12 The Originals S03E12 The Vampire Diaries S07E13 The Originals S03E13 The Vampire Diaries S07E14 The Originals S03E14 The Vampire Diaries S07E15 The Originals S03E15 The Vampire Diaries S07E16 The Originals S03E16 The Vampire Diaries S07E17 The Originals S03E17 The Vampire Diaries S07E18 The Originals S03E18 The Vampire Diaries S07E19 The Vampire Diaries S07E20 The Originals S03E19 The Vampire Diaries S07E21 The Originals S03E20 The Vampire Diaries S07E22 The Originals S03E21 The Originals S03E22 The Vampire Diaries Season 8 The Originals Season 4 The Originals Season 5 Legacies Season 1 Legacies Season 2 But honestly both shows are very independent and the crossovers to me don't really affect the timeline that much but do whatever you think is best!

2021-08-06 03:29:15 +0000 UTCThe Originals starts with Season 5 and should be watched along with it. I'll see if I can find a good watch order unless someone else beats me to it.
