This show's major weakness is how over the top it gets

2021-08-28 05:06:14 +0000 UTCI feel like the Oliver arc was worse but god did they drag this arc out and on forever it seems. I would have loved it if it wasn't so dramatized, so god damned over the top. I really enjoyed the group dynamic of Johnny's friends and would have liked them intermixing with our gang.

2021-08-28 05:01:57 +0000 UTCJohnny and his whole storyline were a true anchor around this show's neck. Completely tanked the ratings, and rightfully so, imo. Good riddance, honestly. And as others have said, while I'll normally happily blame Ryan & Marissa for most things on this show, they are not remotely responsible for all of Johnny's stupid decisions throughout the season. They didn't get him injured in the first place (he's the one who ran out in front of a car without looking), they didn't ruin his relationship, they didn't get him drunk with a 14-year-old, and they didn't put atop that cliff. That was all him, every step of the way.

2021-08-19 19:01:37 +0000 UTCIdk if this is a hot take, but Johnny fucked up his own life. He chose to give into his obsession with a girl who had a boyfriend, ruining his own relationship with a great girl. He chose to insert himself into Ryan & Marissa's drama instead of focusing on the surf competition, resulting in his accident. He chose to get involved in an inappropriate relationship with the damaged, 14-year-old sister of the girl he claimed to want distance from. On multiple occasions, Ryan & Marissa went out of their way to save or try to save Johnny from himself: 1) stopped him from fighting Volchok, 2) got him the doctor's appointment, 3) took care of him after his injury, 4) raised money for his surgery, 5) stopped him from committing armed robbery & 6) tried to talk him down from the ledge. Should Marissa have been more sensitive to Johnny's feelings for her and given him a lot more space? Yes. But Marissa & Ryan are not responsible for all of his stupid life choices.

2021-08-19 13:30:47 +0000 UTCI was fine with Johnny sharing his feelings with Marissa. If he didn't, he would have always wondered what could have been. And I think it was OK he went and saw Ryan to tell him man to man vs just going behind his back. But yeah, the ending sucked.

2021-08-19 11:27:27 +0000 UTCSame! I feel like S3 didn't know where it wanted to go most of the time, but S4 took certain storylines and stuck with it.

2021-08-19 11:21:29 +0000 UTCI think yes Ryan and Marissa fucked up Johnny's life, but they are in no way responsible for his death. He chose to climb up there hella drunk and he didn't let Ryan help him. I found it really sad, but I also was never so invested in Johnny that it was as sad as some other parts of the show.

2021-08-19 11:20:56 +0000 UTCI feel like Kaitlyn gets better after this episode. I don't love s3 because of all the drama that Johnny brought especially in his last couple of episodes. I lowkey like it better after this episode, S4 is great tho

2021-08-19 05:59:03 +0000 UTCSo I feel like the common reception after this episode was thank god. Most people hated Johnny, he just added unnecessary drama with this whole love triangle bit and unlike other characters who became decent side characters with relationships with multiple main cast members (ex. Luke, Anna, Alex), Johnny just had Marissa. He never really had this believable friendship with Ryan or Kaitlyn. And Chili didn't add anything to the show that Seth already didn't provide. So while in context what happened to Johnny is tragic (his entire life and goals are ruined because he met Marissa and Ryan), for the sake of the show, it now has one less character to give screentime to. Season 3 is still going on and it is considered the weakest season so there is more to get to before season 4 starts which is a lot better.
