I think it was really frustrating for Alexis to not be communicated with and I completely understand that. Mutt didn't give her anything to work with and communication is like THE most important thing in a relationship. The whole beard thing was just an exhibition of Mutt's poor communication skills imo.

also i want to clarify that i do agree that she has no say on what mutt does or does not do with his body, that is 100% his choice. but i do know women who are in long term relationships with their guys that have beards and there are conversations like "honey, i'm thinking of shaving...." and it's just a simple conversation. i really do think it was less about the beard and moreso about the lack of communication as a whole. he absolutely didn't need to ask her permission, he absolutely didn't need to tell her he was going to do it. it's his body, his choice, etc. but i think it was a representation to her of the lack of communication that was already present and kind of the causation of everything coming to a head. i just want to clarify that. if she really was being controlling - which i'm not sure was her intent - then yeah, that's a problem and she would not be in the right there. but given the rest of her emotional growth this episode, i just want to give her the benefit of the doubt. i think it was a matter of things finally coming to a head and them both realizing that this relationship, while meaningful in it's own ways, just wasn't the right thing for either of them

Yeah. That silence is the breakup scene. Very well done. Alexis was definitely being a bit controlling about the beard. If she wanted to change her hair, I guarantee it would never cross her mind to ask Mutt what he thinks first. I think Mutt's response to her wanting to compromise was meant to indicate that he knows neither of them is willing to make that change. He's not comfortable talking and she wouldn't be able to talk less no matter how hard she tried. She even had to talk about how nice silence is. I think the pie was her trying to make a point about, "What if I got fat?" But Mutt didn't even pick up on it. More proof that they are fundamentally very different and set in their ways.

What Mutt does to his body, Alexis had zero say in that. And her feeling ultimately showed how shallow their relationship was in terms of how she felt about him.

when he reached for her hand and she reached back and nodded with tears in her eyes, that was like the "goodbye" i felt

alexis i feel was in the right this episode. like she was trying, and communication maybe a love language for her. when mutt just stopped talking to her, she felt like she had to talk more in order to overcompensate. she was worried if she didn't talk, then they'd have no conversation, and she was right. she asked him several times to open a conversation, and he just wouldn't. which, i mean, he's a quiet person and that's fine, but i feel like she was asking for him to meet her halfway and they realized it just wasn't right for them. i think she showed a lot of emotional growth this episode. and i feel like it was less about the beard and more about her feeling left out of his life. like she even said she would have been okay if he just talked to her, and i think she was realizing she just wanted him to communicate more about little details. i just really thought she showed a lot of growth and maturity. re: the cake thing: the way i took it....she eats her smoothies and salads to stay skinny. so her ordering the cake was her being like "okay, you can change your physical appearance and i can change mine." but i may be wrong about that. i LOVED the hug at the end. the way david wrapped his arms around her....he made such a stink when she first asked but the moment it came down to it, the way he embraced her was such a tender and love-filled moment. moments like this are the heart of the show. this is a family that, at the end of the day, loves each other endlessly and that's something so beautiful and special.

"The talk" was expressed thru their emotions/facial expressions at the table. You could see the changes and realizations in them.
