I think Erin was definitely jealous, but also has no idea that was what she was feeling. In my experience, teenaged girls often can not know their own feelings. To a certain extent, I think that she was concerned for her friend making a "bad choice" as well. Ireland, being a very Catholic country, can historically be a bit behind as far as modern ideas on sex. In the Republic of Ireland, abortion was illegal until 2018 and condoms were actually illegal until 1985, which would probably about 10 years earlier than this at them most. Now these things were not illegal in Northern Ireland because they are part of the United Kingdom, but being Catholics, these girls may have a bit more of an "Irish" view towards sex than their Protestant counterparts, and certainly James who was raised in England. So, while I do think Erin definitely had jealously as a bit of a motive, I don't think she's anywhere close to admitting that, even to herself.
