I don't think the show is trying to make us like Joe. I think the writers just wanted to delve into his past a bit, to sort of color why Joe behaves the way he does - not to make excuses for him, but to give us a glimpse into the events that made him into the person he is.

2021-08-23 20:25:23 +0000 UTCAnd I think the whole Forty/Love thing is exacerbated by him being a self-destructive addict, so she feels like she always has to think of him first or else, he'll spiral and she'll feel guilty about that. I agree that Love and Forty shouldn't be so co-dependent, but it is extremely difficult to break those patterns if this is something Love has been doing since childhood.
