I think you may just not have seen a relationship like Joe and Gerry's in real life to find the funny in it. It's very real that some men will always hate any man who takes away their little girl, even if he's been a good husband to her for 17 years. That's why it's so funny when Joe will find fault in anything Gerry does, no matter what the reality is. If you ever watched Everybody Loves Raymond, it's kind of like the mother-in-law and wife on that show's relationship. As for Mary and the girls bullying the less alpha men in their lives, I think that's a bit of an Irish thing. Many Irish folks will tell you that they love to "take the mickey", which means to pick on your friends in good fun. They also tend to "pile on" when engaging in that good humored banter. Gerry mostly just puts up with it because he is Irish and understands that, even if he does sometimes get frustrated with it. James, being English, doesn't seem to quite grasp that concept and therefore the humor can at times come from his genuine hurt and the other characters' inability to recognize that. Some of the humor in this show is a bit specific to the time and place, while other aspects are incredibly universal. Side note: When Mary was freaking out about her "punt" purse, it was because it was the one that had the correct currency to use in Ireland (as opposed to Norther Ireland which uses the British pounds sterling (in her "sterling" purse). The Irish pound or "punt" was what they used before switching to the Euro. So, she was upset because she thought they weren't going to have the correct money to pay for anything once they crossed the border.
