All of the main cast did smoke during the first season except for David Schwimmer (Ross) as it was the 'in' thing. They all quit for season 2 though, think reality hit them and so they all made the agreement.

2021-09-05 11:40:29 +0000 UTCIn the mid to late 90s (in my experience on the east coast/borderline midwest) about half of people in their teens and twenties still smoked to some extent. In most places restaurants had smoking and non-smoking sections, and in bars and coffee houses it was still allowed. I went to an arts focused college at that time and when we had a break during a two hour class it was still referred to as a "smoke break" and more than half of the class went outside to smoke. I actually started smoking in order to look natural if I had to as an actor (much like Joey in this episode) and was only finally able to quit a couple of years ago.

I would have given away the $1000 though cuz Phoebe’s right - I didn’t earn it. I would have kept the thumb money cuz that’s traumatizing. Lol. I don’t understand smokers either but then again I have asthma.
