The scientist, Dr. Tang made her first appearance in the season opener, when Clark was under RedK. She was the one in Lionel's limosine at the docks who was checking that Clark's replacement stock of his blood was the genuine article. Also the abandoned facility Metron Pharmaceuticals was previously mentioned in the second season episode with the kid that turned into Jekyll when exposed to sunlight. So Lionel's been experimenting with people for quite some time.

It was kinda interesting to see Clark grapple with the fact that he can't help everyone (particularly people who are ill). I think you're right, Lana and Lex do have some mild chemistry, but you could also argue that scene has a "I'm a protective big brother" vibe to it. It's interesting that they leave it kinda ambiguous. Lana and Lex have been business partners for some time and seem to respect each other. I also enjoyed the small scene of Lex interacting with Chloe. I like them partnering up to investigate Lionel. Wish we got more scenes of them interacting since they both tend to be rather quippy in their dialogue.
