2024-08-31 04:39:29 +0000 UTCDamon talks about the tradition of the bell-ringing ceremony, i.e. Remembrance Day, at Mystic Grill. It's because of cholera in the 1820s, people would be asked to be buried with a string and with a bell attached to it so that they could ring the bell if they so happened to actually be alive and their family, who would be by the grave, could rescue them. This became sort of one of those weird Mystic Falls holiday celebrations where ringing a bell became the way they remember those that they have lost... at least I think that's the purpose of the bell now. In all seriousness regarding the Elena/Stefan stuff, I think it was refreshing for Elena to see Stefan not all bogged down by nearly 200 years of guilt, trauma and pain. While I Don't think that she still has romantic feelings for Stefan any more, I do think that it made her happy to see Stefan happy and having fun. But outside of that, totally a baiting tactic by the writers. All the callbacks to early Stelena - when they first met, when she saw his vamp face, when they went on top of the Ferris wheel, etc. They literally played the song (Gravity) that they played for Stelena's first kiss during their almost kiss here. The Damon/Jeremy moment is SO good. It's so unexpected and heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. Matt leaving a whistle is a blink-and-you'll-miss it moment. In 3x05, the senior prank night that Klaus and Rebekah crashed, Matt mentions that Bonnie and him used to lifeguard together the summer before their junior year (ergo, a time before the series even started). It was a callback to that. Bonnie's funeral is one of the best scenes in the show. It was an attempt to give Bonnie what she deserved and I can at least respect that. In terms of the Other Side stuff, everyone stays on the Other Side permanently, unless they have found peace. Witches can see other witches on The Other Side, but everyone else roams around alone, which I believe has been touched in previous episodes. But, if there are any spoilers in this, let me know!
