Well shit, I literally just resubscribed to this because I just realized how far they were in Buffy... But now... should I even bother if I'm only here for Buffy?

2022-01-09 21:14:40 +0000 UTCWell looks like I'm not gonna waste my time watching this reaction.

2021-09-30 10:51:51 +0000 UTCIs there going to be any sort of answer/reaction/rebuttal to all these comments, Stephen? Cause they're all good points and if it happens again in the next episode the same thing is going to happen.

2021-09-29 03:00:06 +0000 UTCWhat to say here that hasn’t been said already… if you want to be on your phone while doing these reactions, can you AT LEAST pause the episode while doing so? It’s such a bad habit that’s gotten so much worse over the past year or so. If you don’t want to do Buffy/Angel reactions anymore, communicate that to us. It’s not fair to any of us to continue to support a content creator who’s putting out sub-par content in hopes that it’s going to get better. I’m just tired of excusing it at this point. Why any of us still put up with it is beyond me.

2021-09-27 19:00:44 +0000 UTCDude. For the love of ALL THE THINGS. Put. Down. Your Damn. Phone. It is so frustrating it borders on making me avoid watching my favourite episodes or moments because I know there's a high probability you won't be paying attention.

2021-09-27 08:24:58 +0000 UTCTotally agree. I'm not renewing my membership after this month...it's so disappointing every time but especially for amazing scenes like that one! It's really unfortunate because it means I won't get to see Brian and David's reactions and I freaking love their reactions to friends, Big Bang, 70s show. But I'm not giving my hard earned money for someone not paying attention. I'm so absolutely guttered since he's finally on buffy season 7 but it's so rude
Stacey
2021-09-26 21:34:50 +0000 UTCSo disappointed, the most exciting and important scene of the whole show and you are watching your phone... I have no words... I waited for this reaction since the begging of the show and that is what I get.

2021-09-26 16:02:14 +0000 UTCWell, I don't think the sympathy is ever really with Xander. However, it's not like all his friends are going to dump him just for leaving Anya. That's not something people would do in real life. Plus, Anya handled things badly too. She became a demon again and is doing things that are obviously wrong. I love Anya and hate that she got hurt, but she didn't handle it right. I'm not sure anyone is sympathetic to the abusive boyfriend. However, we also don't kill people without any sort of trial or anything. That kind of thing has been established on Buffy too. Buffy doesn't kill humans...even if they are bad. It's her job to save them regardless. That's why she tried to stop Willow last season. That's why she makes Anya turn the boyfriend back. That doesn't mean anyone is sympathetic towards him. Spike and Buffy have always had that sort of relationship where they hit each other and throw around hurtful words. Honestly...Angel has hit her a few times too...even as Angel and not Angelus. I'm not saying it's right, but they used it to show Spike's desperation for his secret not to get out.

2021-09-25 06:55:24 +0000 UTCHe missed 90% of that beginning scene because he was looking down at his phone for most of it. He didn't make the connection that this was now the second consecutive random girl who gets chased and killed in the opening minutes of the episode. If he didn't draw the parallel to the girl at the beginning of the first episode, I would be shocked if he drew the parallel to that scene being an homage to Alias.

2021-09-25 03:39:35 +0000 UTCStorywise a good episode, but morally it is bit wierd for me, that the sympathy is with xander, the abusive boyfriend and spike, who soul having or not, hits Buffy and taunts her. It is just a bit of for me. But storywise in the story of spike it is good, I just care more about buffys reaction to everything that happened to her.

2021-09-25 00:43:55 +0000 UTCBefore I get into the Spike stuff...I'm surprised you didn't recognize the homage to Alias at the beginning. They have the girl dressed up just like Sidney was in the first episode. You did a pilot reaction for it, so I thought you would get it. They even do the same sort of music...that upbeat techno sound. Alias was actually paying homage to Run Lola Run, but that is a whole other thing. Also...that last scene that everyone keeps talking about is written by Joss Whedon. He wanted to get it just right. It's widely considered one of the most important Buffyverse scenes. Also notice Sarah's amazing acting. You can see her reaction to Spike's words play across her face. They are not ignoring the rape. They mentioned it a bunch this episode and last, but they are not outwardly saying it. For example, that is half of what Spike it prattling on about.. "I hurt the girl," etc and it's also why Xander is super aggressive towards him when he shows up. The rape was out of character for Spike in my opinion. However, I mentioned on that specific episode's discussion that I'm not sure how they get where they are going with the story without doing that. THIS is exactly what I meant by that, but didn't want to spoil it for you before. Spike had to have a drastic wake up call. If you remember...after he raped Buffy... he was in his crypt and he was upset. He says he "can't be a monster and can't be a man...so he's nothing." Steven your commentary on that moment was about how they can't possibly redeem Spike because he'll never change. That's exactly the reaction they wanted you to have. They needed to take his character to that point of extreme in order to push for change. Basically it was Spike hitting "rock bottom." He always wanted to get his soul back...not get the chip removed. The chip didn't matter for how he treated Buffy. Remember...they showed the chip didn't work on her. You said the Anya scene in the bar was weird. You were confused on why Spike would lash out. Well, Anya saw that he had a soul. She recognized it because she's a demon. That's why she asked him "how did you do it?" Spike realizes she is going to spill the beans about his soul to the whole group. He panics and resorts to "acting" like his old self as much as possible. He tries to be an ass to throw them off. Basically he wanted his secret to remain hidden. This is mainly because he feels he deserves to suffer and be punished for what he did to Buffy. He doesn't want them to forgive him. He knows if they know he has a soul that he isn't really the same person that did those awful things. Giving Spike his soul was the only way to redeem him. Remember the flashbacks when we saw Spike before he was a vampire? He was a good, sweet person that was a little nerdy. Suddenly, that person or soul has to deal with the fact that he's killed and hurt people for hundreds of years. That is what Spike is going through right now. Of course that is going to make him a little crazy! Those marks on his chest was a clue. He was literally trying to claw his soul out to stop the pain and guilt he feels. You might want to go back and rewatch all the Spike "crazy" parts from episode 1 and 2. Really listen to what he says. He isn't just speaking gibberish. Some of it is clues for future episodes, but some of it shows exactly what is going through his mind. It lets you into how Spike has changed as a character. This is really important to understand for this season.
Terri
2021-09-24 23:25:31 +0000 UTCSpike did want to get his soul soul back at the end of last season. After he almost raped her, he purposely went on a quest to get his soul back in order to be the person that Buffy deserved. They sort of play it as a misdirect which leads to a lot of people assuming he was surprised when he got his soul back. But he was not and that’s what he wanted to do the whole time. That’s what he’s explaining to Buffy in that final scene

2021-09-24 21:24:52 +0000 UTCI agree, I know it’s his reaction but it seems pretty unfair considering we’re paying to watch his reaction to the show. It also bothered me that he didn’t realize that Spike wanting his chip back was a misdirect not his intention.
Cassidy
2021-09-24 19:34:01 +0000 UTCIf you listen to what Spike says in that last scene, you realize that he went through those trials with the intention of getting his soul back. He didn't want to be the type of creature that would do what he did to her. Having his soul back changes a lot of things. Just think of it like this, Angelus murdered Jenny. Is Angel culpable for Jenny's murder? He feels the guilt of it but as Angel, we are fairly certain he would never do anything like that. The same is kind of coming into play here with Spike. As far as the rest of his jabber goes, well... just keep watching.

2021-09-24 13:56:42 +0000 UTCLiterally one of the most important scenes ever of the show is taking place and he’s on his phone. So much information is being thrown at the viewers as to why Spike WILLINGLY got his soul and he thinks Spike was trying to become evil again and not get his soul. It’s one thing to have different opinions especially with this show but to not even understand the basic levels of storyline all because of the willingness to ignore the show to look down and away. I really hope you can change this habit because it’s not just this show, it’s with others as well. Every other reactor pauses or waits until what they’re watching is over to do that kind of stuff.

2021-09-24 13:13:27 +0000 UTCCanon: Spike went to get his soul. Also, they did mention FOUR times in this episode about the attempted R. They're not ignoring it. But Buffy needs to know what's going on with Spike because he is a major player in the universe, but she was standoffish with him. Spike has a lot to deal with in terms of reality vs. in his head vs. the demon in him vs. the soul so he's all over the place. Angelus didn't get his soul and snap into being Angel. It's a long process. I do hope you rewatch the last scene with full attention before the next episode because it's really beautiful and important. Don't take this the wrong way dude, because I really enjoy your reactions, but you're not picking up on everything and you're missing vital bits of a larger puzzle with the phone thing. I think your head is still in the season 6 story arc and you're not expecting much from this season because 6 was a let down for you, but season 7 is NOT season 6. It's more akin to 3 or 5 in terms of quality storytelling and the overall arc, but you're not going to enjoy it if you're not paying attention because I feel like you've already wrote it off as a bad season and wrote Buffy off as a show that went downhill rather than a show that has ONE iffy season.

2021-09-24 12:21:44 +0000 UTCI have to second the reactions. I was excited, but the commons make me not really want to watch it. I am always going back and forth on my continued support for the channel. The updates are irregular for the 5 tier, I came for buffy but I get 2 episodes a month tops because Angel and Buffy take up the same place in the roster. And then you miss a lot or aren't paying attention. David and Brian do far better, but Steve has been told this many times, and he's choosing to ignore this feedback sadly.

2021-09-24 09:45:06 +0000 UTCI could write pages upon pages on why, but everything has already been said by others better. I kept hoping you would learn to turn off your phone, but with that and the constant beard and ear scratching I had enough. Disrespectful. I'm out. Take care.

2021-09-24 07:03:31 +0000 UTCThat's the thing, we shouldn't have to warn him. He should already be paying attention. Smh.

2021-09-24 06:46:28 +0000 UTCI was so excited to see this reaction, specifically for the last scene, which is one of the most powerful scenes I've seen from Buffy or any other series, only to read the comments and find out once again, he wasn't paying attention and didn't understand what was going on, so I might as well not even bother. At this point, it's simply disrespectful to keep looking down and not giving the show your undivided attention, since we're paying to watch your reaction. No other reactor does this, they have the common decency to at least pause the show when it happens. This has been a huge problem since forever, but now it seems like he's just not that into the show anymore. Which by the way, is PERFECTLY FINE...except...why would we pay to watch you not have a good time? How is that enjoyable to us? Just say you're not into it anymore and be done with it. *sigh*
Marshall Dante Robertson
2021-09-24 06:42:05 +0000 UTCSomeone forgot to warn him in these first few episodes of this season to make sure he's actually watching the opening scene and not looking at his phone. I don't think he made the connection that this was the second consecutive random girl being chased and killed in the opening minutes of the episode.
Fuiono Ching Sung
2021-09-24 06:38:51 +0000 UTCI’m really disappointed I haven’t even watched this reaction yet just looked at the comments and knowing he looked at his phone for most of that final scene makes me not even want to watch it. That last scene in my opinion is one of the greatest of the show. It’s really starting to seem like steve can’t be bothered even paying attention. A lot of stevens opinions I don’t agree with and that’s fine but to not even watch the screen is really annoying.

2021-09-24 06:27:39 +0000 UTCDon't know what happened I posted this like an hour ago but then saw it disappeared. Weird thing with Patreon I've had happen on other reactor comment sections too. Hate to be that guy again but seriously man one of the most pivotal and deep scenes of the series with Buffy finding out Spike has his soul again and you're looking at your phone again. Also Spike was never going to the Demon to get the chip out, that was just a misdirect. It sounded like it but from what you hear him say here etc he went to the demon to get his soul back because he wanted to be the kind of man who would never try and attack her like he did. They just purposely made it sound like he wanted to get the chip out and kill her. But like others have said he can already hurt her so it would be about him being able to hurt others again but he never wanted that.He said he wanted to be what he was, and for her to get what she deserved, meaning having his soul back but it could also sound like he wanted to kill her. It was just a misdirect so we wouldn't guess he was getting the soul until the Demon said it. Also he was just actingin the Bronze to avoid the Soul reveal. And about the rape she is feeling sorry for him and they are probably not harping on it because he has his soul back now so he is no more responsible for it than Angel was for Angelus killing Ms. Calendar. And while they still feel guilt for those things and say "they" did those things their souls were gone and it wasn't really them it was the demon that did. When it comes to what he is seeing without spoilers from what we have seen this episode and last he is dealing with the memories of the people he killed and seeing something else appearing as the previous big Bads and Buffy. And about Anya. Personally I never understood how all of them are so casual about her being a demon again. OK, when Evil Willow was there it wasn't the time but after for me it seems like Buffy should have tried to either take her power source or kill her. They seem to be way to blase about her being a Vengeance Demon again just like being cool with her friend Halfrek too. They are vengeance demons out there cursing men, possibly killing them and maybe getting the women or others killed like with the girl in this one or how Cordelia died in The Wish. He left her at the altar but then she becomes Demon again and tries to get his friends to kill him with a wish after that she lost any being on her side from me.

2021-09-24 06:12:11 +0000 UTCSteven, when the girl was talking to Xander she expressed how abusive her recent ex was so when she saw Spike punch Anya in the face her immediate reaction was to run!! Totally believable and normal reaction.. even with the demon after her, her main thought after watching that would have been to run. She wasn't being a dumbass, she was reacting to abuse!

2021-09-24 05:57:11 +0000 UTCYes i agree its really annoying...thats why he doesn't get the show or understand it half the time...he misses so much looking at that phone....even if there isn't dialogue being said alot is going on in Buffy. The last scene of this episode was so powerful and he looked at his phone for 90% of it.

2021-09-24 05:51:30 +0000 UTCNot paying enough attention to what the characters say or do lead inevitably to draw the wrong assumption. You assume that Spike was trying to kill Buffy, he doesn’t need the chip removed for that. Remember he can hurt her. You keep missing a lot of things by looking at your phone all the time and only occasionally glancing at the screen. The writers and directors of this show put a lot of thoughts in how they film it, frame it and the actors give fantastic nuanced performances.

2021-09-24 05:11:42 +0000 UTCHey Steven, I usually don’t have a huge long response but I think you should read this to get a better understanding as to what is going on with Spike… I’ll explain the last scene to the best of my ability and you can still hate the scene or love it and don’t let others cloud your judgement. I think my explanation will probably clear some confusion you are having. When Spike left town at the end of season 6, the audience was tricked (misdirected) into believing that Spike fought all those trails because he wanted his chip removed. We all thought that because of the dialogue. At the end of season 6 he asked to make him what he was! Before he lost his soul (when he got sired by Dru), he was a man with a soul so basically Spike fought to get his soul back. But you kept thinking that he wanted to get the chip back as did a lot of viewers UNTIL THIS EPISODE! Spike’s entire dialogue in the last scene of this episode explains what he did and why he did it. If you remember season 5-6, Buffy main criticism towards Spike was that he didn’t have a soul and that he couldn’t love without one. It’s no different from Angelus who torched Sunnydale when he didn’t have a soul and the soul is what makes Angel feel human and feel regretful and feel true real love. Spike was loved because he was Spike but along the way the audience forgot that he is a demon without a soul and that really the chip was the only thing holding him back. Spike is different from Angel because Angelus was CURSED with a soul and the curse still lives on of a moment of true happiness will turn him evil. Spike is not cursed with a soul, he fought for that soul because he attempted to rape Buffy. The moment Spike attempted to rape Buffy, that was a wake up call that be had to change. Again Spike proved to be different from any other soulless vampire because he felt the guilt for what he did and couldn’t forgive himself. In this episode Buffy says “why” and he said because be brought shame on her. Spike is going crazy because he has a soul and is living with regret of all bad things he did, more importantly what he did to Buffy, the one he kept saying he loved above all. Angel is the first vampire we knew of who had a soul and Spike becomes the first vampire in history to fight to get a soul. Buffy has the emotions because she knows the difference of a soulless vampire and a one with a soul because of her relationship with Angel. Right now Spike is self loathing himself and he knows he doesn’t deserve forgiveness for the bad he’s done even with the soul and that’s why he tried to keep it a secret. He wanted Buffy to still treat him like the monster he still viewed himself as. You have to remember it took Angel decades to even socialize with humans so for Spike, we are literally seeing him during first months of having a soul back after 140+ years of evil so all of this is hitting him at once. It’s hitting Spike probably harder because the person be claimed to love in Buffy was hurt by him. For Spike getting a soul literally meant that he’ll always torture himself and he put that torture on himself because of what he did to Buffy. You should rewatch that last scene with the subtitles on and probably your view will change now that you know everything.
