I think Chandler having a 'quality' was referencing every one thinking he was gay when they first read the scripts, now I don't know if he was written gay in nature but I think it was a few people who thought he was gay until Matthew Perry did Chandler for the first time. I'm pretty sure it was an interview with Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe) that said she thought he was gay when she read through script.

2021-10-08 14:43:08 +0000 UTCI think Chandler is the only member of the group that "having a quality" gag would work with. I also think there's a wonderful balance measured in this episode, highlighting the burgeoning improvement in social attitudes towards sexuality. Why I think it works for his character particularly, has more to do with how confident he feels, when trying to attract the opposite sex. While other older comedies may have gone the route of a male character seeing this as some sort of clichΓ©d affront to their masculinity. At the time this would have felt way more progressive than it might do today to new audiences. That is where the comedy comes in. This is indeed surrounds the context that Emily rightly points out. Chandler is perhaps only concerned with how this perception might affect his future success in attracting women. Which is why they play on the idea of the kinds of men he might attract as well. This show does this flip the script comedy a lot where the humour comes from parodying the situation.

2021-10-08 03:59:53 +0000 UTCwhile some of the jokes regarding sexuality are very much dated, it was still so progressive at the time. i am a 90s baby. i didn't even know "gay" was a thing until middle school. everyone immediately around me would say "he's...you know...strange" for an example. so for this show to go the places it did and have the conversations it did, while it's outdated by today's standards, it really did have some quite progressive moments. ross outright saying he doesn't care if chandler is gay or straight, down to the conversation with the guy in the breakroom at the end. i can appreciate these conversations given the context. also i really love that little scene with monica and her mom. i think most parents genuinely try to do better than how they were raised. even if they fail in some areas, i think a majority do try and i do agree - i think monica's mom really is better to monica than nanna was to her. and that's a frightening thought. i love the little moment of her tucking her hair to the side and complimenting her. as goofy as friends can be, it's got little moments like that that tug on all the feels.
