Enzo is great

Daniel R

I’m not trying to make him any better. I am just genuinely interested in how these five years of captivity changed him. And having his humanity off is definitely a factor in that. In terms of the 12 humans he killed, I don’t think he necessarily enjoyed killing them, although the Damon we know now definitely does enjoy the kill, and I think we saw that in 1958. By describing him as “tender,” I’m not saying he still wasn’t a monster. I just think his approach to life altered afterwards.

Ehh... i dont think he was all that tender when he killed 12 people to try and break a sire bond in New Orleans before WW2. He seemed to even have his humanity on at the time. Damon is a great character. No reason to make him seem like a better guy than he is though.

I love Enzo so much! He made such a strong impression on me already! I was shocked to find out he was still alive. This backstory for Damon is something I have been waiting for for so long. We finally get the full story of why Damon turned off his humanity. And he had it off for over 50 years, once we meet him in Season 1. Just thought it was cool that they addressed it. Damon being a full-on serial killer also shook me to my core. I thought the revenge plan would just be an exercise and not something he'd follow through on... I'm also interested in this episode, since we touched on PTSD, if Damon systematically killing the Whitmore family, is a toxic/unhealthy way for him to deal with his own PTSD? We know that he kills people when he's experiencing emotional turmoil, so I wonder how much it affected him when he finally turned his humanity back on and that's why he continued to kill? Like, I can't possibly fully comprehend what it means to have your humanity off for so long and then have literally those years rush all back in when you decide to turn it on. There is really no good way to deal with that. I also like how they used Enzo to further deepen Damon's character, even in the fifth season. It's clear that Enzo seemed to be a good soldier - very strong, emotionally, mentally and physically, and extremely loyal. He's sturdy and resilient. Damon, however, was a deserter during the Civil War, and he never fought in World War II. We see Damon as this Big Bad, but honestly, he was never really built for that kind of stuff and clearly didn't have Enzo's control, endurance or devotion. He knew how to have a good time and be a vampire because of Sage, but he was still tender and loving and trusting up until 1953. I think those five years really did a number on Damon and changed his character to who we know now, and who we met in Season 1.
