No one should be mad at you for reacting honestly. And the Gerry and Joe stuff is pretty out there. I just think you may be taking a very broad comedy a little bit too seriously. David's done that on occasion too and there's nothing wrong with that viewpoint. All of these characters are written with a very broad brush for the sake of comedy. Things like Joe and Gerry's relationship or the strict and crazy moms are exaggerations of how people can be in real life. Kind of like Everybody Loves Raymond or one of those shows where the mother in law constantly criticizes the wife. It's playing up those things for laughs. On the other hand, divorce would not really be an option for Gerry culturally at that time. Even though they live in the UK they are culturally Irish and Ireland only legalized divorce in 1995 or 1996 right around when this show would be taking place. And as Catholics divorce would be a HUGE deal and something that a lot of people would not even consider regardless of how bad their marriage was. I do, however, think that Gerry and Mary do genuinely love each other, they just have a dysfunctional relationship with the rest of her family. I feel for Gerry but I also find Grumpy Joe very funny. On another note, if you've seen the movie The Usual Suspects, that whole subplot is a lot funnier. It is a big plot twist whodunnit that they got cut off in the middle of and Mary obsessing about it is pretty funny. Definitely a good movie to check out at some point. The teacher was definitely breaking the law in giving the girls wine, but keep in mind the drinking age in Ireland is 18, so it might not be seen as quite so shocking to give these 16 or 17 year olds wine in that context.
