So the big thing I wanted to touch on is your suggestion of the guy lying to the officer about Bellamy being dead. You have to remember these are all children living on the Earth and the Arc is working to come to Earth. When they get there, the adults are back in charge. The people on the Earth right now lose all power and revert back to being youth under the adults rule. The current governments rule, That means the officer would still be one of the leading people in power. If he arrived and found Bellamy alive, the kid he tasked to kill Bellamy and his family could be in grave danger. Yes, it gets his mom to the Earth but most likely the officer has the kid and/or his mother killed within days.

Without any spoilers, I will say that we will find out in detail what happened and how everyone survived, but so far we only know that there were nuclear bombs about 90 years ago and that apparently we are somewhere in North America so it makes sense that some grounders here do speak English) This was one of my favorite episodes in the early seasons. But there are many more great ones to come.)
