I have a LOT of reactions to catch up on, but I always found this Damon storyline annoying. However, I DO think it's different than what has happened in the past. In the past, it has been about Damon not being worthy of Elena's love and the conflict, rage and sadness that comes with it. Or, to some level, it has been about Elena denying or rejecting him. Either way, he was conflicted over the darkest parts of himself and the parts of himself that was capable of loving Katherine and then Elena. It was extreme emotional turmoil. And, Over time, Elena learned to love him and put his faith in him. I think what's really pushing through here is "Elena's" loss of faith in him, which is essentially his will to live and govern himself accordingly. Without faith, he embraces the darkest parts of himself. He can relish in it. This is not just simply lashing out. There's nothing holding him back, which is categorically different than what we've seen before.
