I really think you’re going to enjoy the next season! The tone kind of goes back to season 1 - it’s lighter and not as dramatic, more humor and less sope opera.

Therese Larsen

There’s no reason why we shouldn’t talk about it, it happened on screen, it’s not a spoiler or anything

Clara Gros-Louis

I kind of wish the comments section didn't confirm Marissa's death, but I also think the show could have done a better job making it clear that she died...I think they tried to do that with all the flashbacks to the pilot episode, but it just wasn't clear that she died. Maybe it was the writing...maybe it was her acting. I don't think we were supposed to question whether or not she died...I think we were supposed to understand clearly that she died...but since it was unclear I kind of wish we just let Steven find out for sure in 4x01. Oh well...at least he was unspoiled. :-)

Christine

If she had just left it would've been weird that they never brought her back for an episode. Ryan would have always had that feeling of "what if". So I'm glad the decision was made for her to just die. And I'm pretty sure that's what Mischa wanted too.

emmainkeri

agreed. season 4 is actually really good bc it focuses on the show's strength - the Seth/Ryan brotherhood, Sandy as the uber dad, Kirsten and Julie basically running Newport, Summer always evolving but still staying true to herself, some sweet romances and a few interesting twists. Also Ryan evolves a lot in S4 in my opinion, especially after idk where they wanted to go with him all through season 3.

I mean, he’s not as spoiled as most of us were watching when it first aired, lol. Mischa leaving the show was huge news and her death was already out there by the time it even aired. This ending was not meant to be remotely ambiguous. The whole episode was a farewell to her character.

Andrea

Can't wait for your reactions for S4 tho. It is actually a very enjoyble season.

As someone who watched the show when it originally aired here’s how it went down. The actress was gonna leave, the creator asked her “do you want me to leave it open ended, like marissa goes off and lives somewhere else kind of a thing (so maybe there would be a potential to come back,) or do you want to be killed off.” She opted to be killed off. The creator was I think 29 at the time and he’s said in the recent years after he had kids, that if he could go back he would not have killed Marissa off. The show was well done in season 1. Then went off a cliff in season 2 and 3, the creator even admitted it. He said he told so much story in season one they ran out of good ideas in the next season. If they ever continue with the story of this show, showing the characters as older, I think they’d bring Marissa back and act like she never left, and Seth and Summer would be the new Kirstin and Sandy. And it would be THEIR kids that have the main story IMO

Billy

I agree. Marissa's choices and actions were somewhat acceptable in season 1, but she barely learned from her mistakes and didn't evolve much as a character. At least she got to go out in a very big way and leave a great story impact for season 4.

thisismaria27

I think it was a good choice to let her go out in a big way. It definitely changed Ryan forever.

thisismaria27

I heard it differently. I heard she wanted to leave and that they wanted it to have more of an impact that her just leaving on a boat.

I was originally a fan of Marissa when the show started because I felt bad for all of her issues she was dealing with, but after awhile I felt like the writing and storylines they were giving her character were frustrating and terrible, because of that I ended up not being a fan of character at all. However I still don't know why they couldn't of just let her leave, she was leaving they had no need to kill her. Yes, it was a shocking moment, yes it was dramatic, but it just felt unnecessary and I still find it an irritating decision.

Jeremy Burch

The actress who plays marissa had issues with the cast and creators of the show so they kill her off

Omar Vargas

Kind of a shame that after keeping this a secret for so long, all the comments are now confirming Marissa's death. Oh well, honestly it's probably better that way considering how the new season starts. One of my favorite episodes, 4x1 :)

emmainkeri

I totally agree! I liked Marissa more when I was younger and her death was heartbreaking, but she was never my favorite and now as an adult watching her is mostly frustrating.

emmainkeri

Aaaaand this is why S4 is my fave, lol. No offense to Marissa fans - I did find her death sad even though this whole storyline was just a messs - but for me that character was an anchor around this show's neck. Cutting her from the show was the right move, imo.

Andrea

One of the best choices they made in this show, imo. I really didn't like Marissa, and I know that's a relatively unpopular opinion. Next episode is my favourite of the entire show, and I think the next Season is the best of the show. Maybe S1 is on par with it. But TV is subjective, so obviously others will have different opinions.

Fredrik IB

yeah they actually did kill her off the show and I feel its hard to avoid the spoiler as I knew for so long that Marissa dies. Season 4 I actually do still overall enjoy as it kind of goes back to its lighthearted ways again after season 3 going more towards the darker side.

Kailey

Literally one of the biggest moments of teen tv show history ever. When this episode aired it was iconic and it was everywhere! A bold choice but the actress made her desire to leave the show very clear and I think they wanted to make it as big as they could. For me this ending is always tear jerking no matter how many times I've seen it because for truly the first time in the show Marissa is getting her life together. For me, that's what always made it so sad

J

There is a lot to unpack with Marissa. The actress got launched into stardom when the show came out. She was the it girl and was frequently with Paris Hilton and stuff. In context, she was like 18 when she started the show so super young and impressionable and she got caught in the hollywood storm. The other actors were older, in their 20s, with Ryan much older than her. So like the other comment said, she did become difficult and unprofessional from some reports. Some directors and actors on the show are not fans of what she did or how she was like on set. And apparently she and the production team were ready let her go at the end of this season. But what's kinda crazy is that she actually spoiled the ending of this episode and said that Marissa died eariler in the day before the episode had aired. People were pretty pissed about it online and stuff once that got out as it spoiled the big ending for this episode. As for season 4, all I will say is that its a bit interesting where the series goes in terms of tone and character relationships going forward.

JustRushOnce

im legit surprised you managed to avoid the spoiler about marissa dying considering how old the show is and how big it was when it was on. they killed off her character because the actress was supposedly "difficult" and "unprofessional" to work with behind the scenes. i didn't watch the oc when it was on air but i remember always reading tabloid stories about how difficult mischa was to work with on set.

cil

I finished the show on Monday but Marissa’s death was so sad. I wasn’t a huge fan but it still hit me hard,it was so unnecessary too.
