The remarks from Pierce are supposed to be about how inappropriate and out of touch he is. His behavior was not acceptable at the time this show aired, the character is just an oblivious boomer, which is the joke.

Also after hearing your take on the relationships and tropes, keep in mind, that this is the first season and they are still trying to find themselves. I always forget Season 1 falls into some clichés
