So traditionally in the comics Superman has struggled with magical opponents (Mxyzptlk is magical). It makes sense, when you think about how OP Clark is and the writers can't always rely on Kryptonite. I enjoyed this episode more than I remembered. This interpretation of Mxyzptlk is much more tolerable than the actual character in the comics, who I'd rank as the number one most annoying Superman villain, IMO.

In the comics he's an imp from the 5th dimension who can bend reality to his will and since his powers are magic-based he can control Superman as well (you will find in this season that Smallville Clark is also susceptible to actual magic). To get rid of him you must trick him into saying his own name backwards. Well, the character first appeared in Superman #30 (Sept. / Oct. 1944), six years after Superman himself premiered.
