The 14 joke by Leo was done, because Mila Kunis, who plays Jackie, lied about her age to get on the show when it started and said she was was gonna be 18 when the show started in 1998, and when it was filming she was actually only 14

2021-07-10 19:01:36 +0000 UTCAlso progressing storylines in sitcoms weren't really a thing until the late 90s and early 00s when shows like this, Scrubs, the Office, HIMYM and others came about. Earlier shows from the mid-90s like Roseanne dabbled in it from time to time but it was pretty intermittent until then. One familiar trope was when major life-changing events such as an impending marriage or a family member getting a new job or moving out something like getting stood up at the altar (way more frequent than happens in RL) would occur and revert everything back to status quo.

2021-02-16 12:49:27 +0000 UTCAnother thing is that the skit was a play off the real life movie/propaganda film Reefer Madness from 1936 which informed the general ideas surrounding marijuana in the 1950s when Red was growing up. Alot of the tropes like Eric's insanity and the murder of Donna are played upon in the actual film. Red would likely have been shown the film either by his own parents or by his teachers in school.

It’s supposed to be the weed smoke as well as the incense smoke they light to cover the smell of the weed. And it’s always the person next to be shown who had the blunt so it’s always “off camera”.
