To reiterate my previous explanation: Sheldon mentions Menelaus' love for Helena as compared to Leonard's feelings for Penny. Menelaus and Helena are from Greek mythology. Menelaus was king of Sparta, one of the city states of ancient Greece. A young prince from the city of Troy also fell madly in love with Helena and kidnapped her. Menelaus then gathered thousands of Greek warrions and thus began the Trojan War. 10 years into that war, Odysseus invented the Trojan Horse. Basically the Greeks pretended to leave and left a huge wooden horse as a present to the "victors" in Troy. What the Trojans didn't know was that the horse was hollow and a dozen (or so) Greek warriors hid inside it. The Trojans pulled the horse into the city and started to celebrate their victory. Then at night, the Greeks came out of the horse and opened the city's gates through which the Greek army invaded and ended the war in their favor. Afterwards (or during) Odysseus pissed off one of the Greek Gods of the Olympus (Poseidon, the God of the seas, if I'm not mistaken) and that's why he and his crew had such a hard way getting home (hence the Odyssey). If you enjoy audio books (or real ones), check out the trilogy "Mythos", "Heroes" and "Troy" by Stephen Fry, a british comedian and actor who also happens to have narrated the Harry Potter books. PS: Odysseus is the Greek name of the character, the Romans called him "Ulysses" as in General / President Ulysses S. Grant. Hercules is also the romanized version, the original Greek is Heracles. PPS: Sorry for g(r)eeking out here, Greek myth has been a favorite of mine since childhood.
