The Man of Steel film isn't a good representation of the Superman verse. Both Jonathan and Clark did/said things that they never would say in the comics. If you want to watch a Superman show besides this one, i would rec Bruce Timm's Superman: the Animated Series, the companion series to the iconic Batman: The Animated Series. Actually just about everything in the DC animated universe is pretty good. This was a great episode, the Superman theme playing in the background gives it such an epic feel.

And yeah, the 1978 Superman movie is not my favorite version of the character and it's of course dated in terms of production values, but the storytelling in that flick is pretty timeless, so it might behoove you watch it soon as this show's lore seems largely inspired by that incarnation.

2021-03-29 18:24:36 +0000 UTCI will say that I think you probably should watch the Superman movie from 1978 because it would help you know who some of the characters are since you said you didn't really read the comics or anything. So like if a character appeared, you'd be like, "OHHH that's him or her." So to at least have watched that movie will give you some knowledge to some of the characters and even actors. I loved seeing Christopher Reeve in this episode.

2021-03-29 14:03:20 +0000 UTCThis episode has such an epic vibe to it, I knew instantly that it was a special episode, mainly due to the awesome score of mr John Williams who is an absolute genius and has some of the most epic soundtracks in movies and tv shows. I also rate this a 10 because of the vibe and the fact that this is the first time we are naming Kripton, Kal-El, etc by their real names and that was an awesome development in the story, and don't forget the symbolism. You have the old superman telling the new superman about his origins like passing the torch over from Reeve to Welling. I always liked that. Rest in Peace Chris.

2021-03-29 13:36:45 +0000 UTCOkay, a couple of things. So this episode adds a bit to a storyline that will continue for the rest of the series. The piece from the ship at the end was introduced in the pilot episode when Jonathan first tells Clark he's an alien. They redesigned it though. Some easter eggs: When the Kryptonian language shown in the show, when it's in messages like in this episode, is actually a 1:1 translation of the Kryptonian alphabet from the comics to the English alphabet. So you can actually find the alphabet online and it will translate just like it does in the show. Also, the music that's playing over the scenes of Clark and Swann and Clark and Jonathan at the end have pieces from the John Williams Superman theme mixed into it. I highly recommend you watch Superman 1 and 2 as well as the show moving forward from here borrows heavily many of the elements, music, artistic direction etc, and thematic moments from those two films.
