I think Kirsten was struggling with alcoholism at least since the end of last season when Seth and Ryan left.

Leora Nechama

Just saw this posted and died laughing…”I’d rather be too old for TikTok than too young to not remember when Marissa Cooper shot Trey in The O.C. to that Imogen Heap song” 😂😂😂

Khandys

that was the original song choice and it's honestly iconic. there's even an snl sketch about that scene using that song

Molly C

No you're not!

emmainkeri

I guess I’m one of the only ones that took the ending seriously I felt horrible for Caleb even though we didn’t like him I still felt bad and I love this song Imogen Heap is amazing and I hate that they made apparently out of it because it was such an intense and sad seeing I thought I was super well done but that’s me

Lexi

But this ending is so intense and so well done the SNL skit is just annoying IMO lol

Lexi

Am I the only one who loves that song and cried their eyes out not laughed? lol

Lexi

Ugh no I hate the SNL skit I don’t like that they made fun of it 😂

Lexi

I made a bet with myself for a mil. bucks that you would laugh during that song scene. Glad you didn't let me down :)). Btw I didn't laugh. That stupid song wasn't a meme yet when I watched it.

Primus

I echo the "please watch the SNL skit" sentiments! Here ya go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmd1qMN5Yo0

I guess I get why that song doesn’t hit well now. Back then it was relatively unknown, so as someone who watched this when it was new, I didn’t think much of the song. I did download it after, and I really like the original song. The only thing that annoyed me about this scene was Marissa was making some progress out of her own insanity, and now here we go. She done shot someone. Yay...more Marissa emotional turmoil stuff. Onwards to season 3 though. Looking forward to how you react to the new storylines.

GymNerd84

Good job summer and Seth, this is on you. This was a thing to tell a grownup, you would tell Sandy, not Ryan!

Mariella Nilsson

- I don't think Trey grabbed the gun to KILL Ryan, he just tried to get him to back off - And I don't think the show is expecting us to be sad about Caleb, it's really more about the other characters (Kirsten) dealing with his death.

emmainkeri

I actually really love the whole storyline of the aftermath of her shooting Trey. Season 3 is so good.

PamPam and her PamPams

Steven I'd really recommend listening to the whole song, it's a slow build before the whatcha say part. The lyrics are great. The singer Imogen Heap is considered a pioneer in the industry, and she writes, produces, composes and engineers music.

emmainkeri

I love that song, they use Imogen's songs a lot on the show. And yep when it originally aired it was great imo.

emmainkeri

That's the original song and parts of it are also played during the funeral scene. When watching it originally (before the memes and the Jason Derulo version) it was still a shocking scene. I actually love the original song though lol.

Rebeccaf87

I don't get how the song ruins the scene? Maybe for someone watching the show now like Steven, but back in 2005, before that godawful Jason Derulo song and memes?

emmainkeri

that song choice became the ultimate meme online .. I totally get why you're laughing bc it doesn't fit that scene at all .. I actually liked the choice of having Marissa shoot him .. she tried getting him off of Ryan and he was about to kill him, so she really had no other choice ..

thisismaria27

The resolution of the Marissa/Trey storyline in hindsight - given this aired 15+ years ago (!!!!) - is definitely a bit problematic, though I found the drama entertaining at the time. What stands out to me now is how little the gang was focused on Marissa's feelings and wellbeing. Summer should have encouraged Marissa to tell Ryan (and an adult) about the assault herself. Ryan's first reaction should have been to talk to Marissa, rather than confront Trey (though it is his brother, so that's messy to be fair). And maybe Seth shouldn't have asked a teenage assault victim to go to her attacker's house and intervene in a violent altercation between two men! Just a thought!

electricroad

I literally bust out laughing when that song played. The SNL skit about it is hilarious

Mo

PLEASE react to the SNL skit

electricroad

Yeah laughter is the acceptable response. It's such an intense scene which is ruined by the song. It removes all the tension from the scene and completely takes you out of it. And yeah the SNL skit is hilarious.

Dannielle

You should really react to the SNL skit that parodies this episode! It makes the ending of this episode even better LOL

Marissa

Marissa killing Trey- the shot queuing the music, was epically corny, to a lot of the fans, so much so they made an SNL skit with Andy Samberg based on it called Dear Sister, which turned into the "mmm watcha say" meme. But yeah this is the original song- Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap. They are brilliant, but yes, it had awful... awful placement in this episode.
