Most reactors don't skip through it because it's so iconic, but it provides some info for you that you're missing. NO SPOILERS----The Avatar is the only person that can bend more than 1 element, specifically all 4. The Avatar can be born into any nation, Aang in this case was born an airbender. The previous Avatar was born a firebender and so on and so forth in a reincarnation cycle.
