When Mel told Joe thank you for telling me no, it’s because she just told Lennox how she did those things when she was 15 because no one cared enough to tell her no like she is telling Lennox. Basically she is thanking Joe for caring enough to tell her she deserves better (his way of saying no). Ok so Joe used to work for her brother-in-law’s company. Even thought the division he worked in made legitimate money for they company, the majority of the company was a fraudulent scheme that ripped people off of a whole lot of money. Joe didn’t know that and lost his whole career and reputation because he worked there. When the whole company went down, Mel’s brother-in-law went on the run while his wife (Mel’s sister) got arrested and put in jail for either being involved or she somehow took the fall. That’s why Mel has custody of Lennox and Ryder. Now in the first episode Joe was basically looking for Mel’s brother in law because he’s on the run and he thought Mel would know. That’s why he showed up at her council meeting and then her house. She had heard of Joe because he was a great financial businessman who made a lot of money for the company before everything fell apart. And then we saw how he ended up being a nanny for Mel. No one in the financial business world is willing to trust him cause he worked for the brother in law. So he lost everything and the his wife too.
