My frustration comes from that he doesn’t seem to pay attention. He looks down on his phone a LOT, and often times he looks down for a couple of minutes without looking up, so of course he misses a lot of details. I mean, if you really have to use your phone, okay, but at least press pause then.

Therese Larsen

i think a lot of the frustration comes from people being disappointed that steven didn't react to the big moments in this episode the way they hoped he would. people expected him to have a bigger reaction to jeremy dying and elena's emotional meltdown at the end. people should lower their expectations when it comes to things like this and accept the fact that its okay if people don't react to scenes or moments the way THEY did.

cil

tell me on twitter then @mindgimmet

Shaun Kemmer

@shaun Kemmer they do address the sire thing later I’ll get back to you then cause what you wrote I get that you disagree with my interpretation and you have a valid argument but you are incorrect about part of your argument but I can’t refute it without pointing to things said or done later in the show.

Libby

I only watch your TVD reactions, is it possible to have a tier for just that? Or for a few shows? Trying to decrease my monthly spending and I only watch ur tvd reactions :/

Shaun Kemmer

He seems to like Matt (I can't relate). Perhaps as the only human in the group, he relates to Matt more? Personally I never liked Matt.

Shaun Kemmer

I don't agree with that interpretation. The humanity switch is related to emotions but it isn't emotions itself. Like a light switch, pressing the switch does not make it brighter or darker (imagine if no cables were attached. Pressing it would not do anything) - instead it begins a process which makes it brighter. The sire bond can make Elena 'press the button' so to speak. It is established that (in real life) breathing a certain way, fake smiling etc etc can change how you're feeling. If Damon told Elena to fake smile and take deep breaths, causing her to feel better, that's not proof that it wasn't the sire bond. The mechanical actions (smiling, breathing) can be influenced with the sirebond even though the domino effects of that causes a change in emotion. But he can't just say "feel calmer. feel less sad" - because that would be a Direct attempt at changing her feelings/emotions. From a meta perspective the show has always done a good job on explaining things. And it was showing that he was using the sire bond to have her turn it off (or at the very least believed that's what he was doing.) First he calms her down by hugging her so she is more 'receptive' and hears him and he says the lines that is always accompanied by when he's trying to use the sire bond (it's what I want, it's what would make me happy etc). And I can't actually technicaly use this last point but I feel like they have acknowledged it was the sire bond in like comic cons and stuff but I haven't seen those in years so I'm not actually using that as an argument; but the show never implies that it was Elena's choice as opposed to the sire bond. Instead it even, multiple times, implies that it WAS the sire bond. And it doesn't make sense to me that they never elaborated on the situation by saying it was Elena's choice, instead multiple times in future episodes they reference the fact that Damon used the sire bond. From a meta-show-runners-perspective it doesn't make sense to me. To me, it's clear that this was the writers/showrunners intention. If the intention was to show that the sire bond didn't work here, and that it was her own choice, they do a horrible job at showing it. Saying in future episodes that it WAS the sire bond. As for 'calm down' I don't think it's direct. What does calming down mean. He can say stop crying (like he did with charlotte) or something. But you can also interpret it as 'feel less sad. feel calmer.' which would be telling her to directly change how she feels - and won't work. But we've also seen a somewhat delayed effect, like when he told her to leave the lakehouse she fought back a little and didn't instantly leave. -- Also I didn't mean to make it this long. Do not take it as me being mad or something. I guess I just used a little too many words to try to explain my perspective more thoroughly.

i do agree with your take on death seeming meaningless on the show when they keep bringing dead characters back. and yes i know it's a supernatural show and its bound to happen but that doesn't change my opinion about this and other supernatural shows manage to kill off characters and keep them dead.

cil

I agree ..this episode with Elena’s grief and wanting to burn down the house was so memorable all these years later.. I am not sure how Steven felt the episode had no emotion besides Matt

james cedro

I'm actually pretty surprised you didn't feel much from Jeremy's death! I've heard you in the past say that when others have died, due to how the characters act, sometimes it's a little too nonchalant, no tears and they move on quickly, which i agree with you there. This episode however shows how this death felt across all characters. It had a huge impact and Elena's spiraling shows a side of her we haven't seen with most people she's lost. I thought this episode was fantastic in the way they showcased the steps of denial during the grieving process. Definitely a high 9/10 for me. Oh well.

Monica Emeline

yikes, I always cringe whenever we get to a good episode and there's a billion comments pointing out what Steven missed :(

Daniel R

Shane’s family is supernatural. His wife was a witch who died because she lost control of her expression. They’ve explained this multiple times. And if his wife was a witch so was his kid.

Rida

Silas does not look like Shane.(not a spoiler) He only projects the image of Shane to Bonnie to convince her to do what he needs. It was established couple episodes earlier that all the dead people in the caves are not ghosts and it is Silas using his power, but because he was almost dead or whatever his power was limited to the caves and mostly coz most of those times people got hurt in those caves and a little bit of blood seeped through to him and fed that little bit of power. But now he drained Jeremy entirely and is free, so his power is strong. At this point we don't know what he looks like, so if anyone to see him, they wouldn't know.

charmed_olive

His wife was a witch remember.

Raximor

I think the purpose of this episode was showing that the sire bond didn’t work here and thus couldn’t really have worked when Damon told her to turn it off. We didn’t get to see the aftermath of Charlotte and how she’s doing, but we have been told that the sire bond only affects actions, not feelings. Stefan, Caroline, and for some reason, Rebekah, have been used to cast doubt on that, but only because the characters themselves don’t want to believe that Elena is in love with Damon. We’ve seen holes in the sire bond so far, and here, he tells her to calm down. She doesn’t. Some people might take that to mean that he needed to say something more direct (although, that’s pretty direct to me, idk). To me, that has always shown the sire bond is not working because this is an emotions problem and the sire bond cannot change your emotions. Which means Elena had to turn it off herself. She listened to Damon because she listened to Damon and decided that was the best choice. Not because of the sire bond.

I Am Not Chamari

When you say "Why would SIlas bring them for Bonnie", like Shane said Silas cant do magic Bonnie has to do his work for him. He would teach Bonnie how to raise the dead with expression and from then on Bonnie has that knowlage. She can bring back whoever she likes.

Nikita Pascari

Pretty sure Shane didn't know Silas brings back only supernatural beings, so he still had hope for his human family. :) also some things do get explained in the future, so it might not make sense now, but TWD like to do the thing where it all comes around and makes sense in the end. :)

This episode is a 10 for me. Everyone's performance and raw emotion sealed it. I know you didn't like Elena burning the house, but that is WHY it is supposed to hit you. We all know that she'll regret it later. As Stefan said...now she can never go home again. Elena was going to burn it before she flipped the switch, but out of grief. She lost her shit in that moment. You can see her realize it when they are all sitting at the table and Bonnie is explaining she has to kill 12 people. Elena had hope until THAT moment. You can see as the camera pans in that she starts to lose her shit. Then it just spirals and grief hits her...she has lost everyone (parents, John, Jenna, Ric, Jeremy) and she has just had enough. She just wants to escape it and leave. That's why burning down the house occurs to her. She's had a lot of bad stuff happen to her while in that house, so obviously she feels negatively about it in that moment. However, years from now...when the grief starts to soften, she might be able to overlook the bad stuff and remember the good memories. However, in this moment, she can only focus on the bad stuff and that's why she wants to burn it down. Damon tried to tell her to calm down, but it didn't work. Also...the sire bond isn't exactly like compelling someone. So Damon couldn't just tell her anything. She was so emotional and lost in grief...I don't even know if trying to evoke the sire bond would have really worked. He ended up kind of doing it when he told her to flip the switch, but Elena also wanted that. She was open to it...sinking into oblivion. Also Damon just didn't have confidence in himself yet. He isn't confident that he's enough for her yet. For example, he tells Stefan to take Elena home when he could have done it and let Stefan look for Bonnie. Then he stays on the island to try to find Bonnie because he thinks she can help Elena (better than he can). Then he tells Stefan that he isn't enough this time....when they discuss Damon telling her to turn it off. So Damon feels like he can't get her through this and he does the last ditch thing he can think of to help (since Stefan, Bonnie, and even Damon telling her to calm down didn't work) and tells her to flip the switch. You missed A LOT of Silas backstory. They've been slowly telling it through Shane and even that hunter. They started clear back when Shane was teaching classes and Damon/Elena visited the class. He was even talking about Silas there. So they've been slowly giving you the backstory for a lot of episodes now. Like others have said...Silas wants to drop the veil so that he doesn't end up in purgatory.

Terri

so while damon could have told her to forget or whatever, she would still feel empty and sad

Victoria Chinaka

also, fake shane (silas) explained why silas wants the veil down: he wants to be w his true love who already found peace, but the other side would trap him when he died. silas wants to drop the veil to be w his love, bringing everyone back is just the result of the veil being gone

Victoria Chinaka

yea this is a notable tvd episode, not sure how he ranked it so low

Victoria Chinaka

also, remember what tyler said: the sire bond affects how you act, not how you feel. so, damon could not make elena feel better

Victoria Chinaka

shane’s wife was a witch, so his child was a witch also

Victoria Chinaka

I know ppl dont like matt. I understand their reasons but for me nobody can hit a crying scene as compelling as the actor for matt. Thats y I fuck with matt's character... that and a couple other reasons of course but this post is already long lol

john segun doe

Since you're getting so much negative feedback on this reaction for some reason, I just want to say I really liked your reaction to this one. I don't agree with everything you feel about the episode, as I think this episode is also a high 8 or a 9 myself, but I loved how much you thought about the various happenings and explained what you thought was going to happen and how you liked certain aspects of how they did the Jeremy and Elena stuff for example. You seem thoroughly invested in the storylines and gives us a real reaction and that's why I'm here. I get you don't like Shane, but I've always thought he added a certain something and considering he's been the Shepard for the Silas arc thus far I did think using him to propose Silas' plan to Bonnie was a nice touch as was revealing Shane still being on the island. As for that being what he looks like or a ghost, you'll have to wait and find out, but always trust TVD to have plenty of stuff going on.

Fly on the Wall

It's a multiple post night lol sorry people... To clear something else up, no Damon couldn't just lie to her or tell her something and she'd feel all better. The sire bond doesn't work that way. It affects how she acts not how she FEELS. Which they showed when he first tells her to calm down and she doesn't. This is why I also think it was ELENA who made the conscious choice after Damon said to turn it off. I don't think he made her do that I think she thought "hey that's a good idea" and did it. I mean Stefan has been saying it multiple times all season "how much grief do you think she can take before she shuts off her humanity"

Libby

Considering what we know about Silas and this show, I don't know why you think it's a leap to think he's a doppelganger of Shane. Just saying. Also, that second half verges really close into spoiler territory if not outright crosses into it.

Fly on the Wall

Shane's family were witches so he would see them again if the veil dropped.

Fly on the Wall

Yes it was explained why Silas wants to bring everybody back. First he doesn't. That's not his goal it's just a side effect and what he's bribing Bonnie with. He wants to destroy the other side so that when he dies he doesn't end up in supernatural purgatory (the other side) Cause even if he takes the cure and ends his immortality that still makes him a witch and therefore he goes to the other side instead of wherever Peace is or where humans go.

Libby

I'm going to say this... everything you think is trash or get annoyed with is 90% of the time because you have forgotten or the show hasn't explained it yet or you missed some piece of the puzzle entirely. Everything in this show is set up and calculated so again if you think somethings is stupid or contrived it's probably cause *you* missed stuff You clearly missed or misinterpreted what the hunter told Rebecca about no one knowing what Silas looks like. It is SILAS who gave people visions in that chamber lol not the rocks. He created those illusions of Shane's wife and Bonnie's grams and the one where Bonnie tripped on Jeremy etc to manipulate them into doing what he wants.

Libby

This is easily a 9 or a 10...not sure what episode you watched. Nina Dobrev's acting was amazing btw.

james cedro

An 8 or 7??? You are sooo far off. I mean maybe if you concentrated on entire episode instead of staring at your cell phone during parts you would feel differently...yes I'm scolding you. Stay focused on what's happening..you assume Silas looks like Shane..but maybe ba certain immortal has powers to do and be whatever he wants. Stay focused.

Lynell Twiner

Katherine knocked the hunter out in Silas's cave. Just before she killed Jeremy by feeding him to Silas.
