Yes, they knew it was the final season but they rushed it, put it forward 3 months, because Showtime wanted the finale to be the lead in to the premier of Ray Donavan.

I get that its kinda out of place here we are in the final season and were inserting this character weve never met who knows our character so well. But They needed a go between for Dexter and Deb, someone to help them work out their shit. And Harry just being a simple cop and coming up with all this "code" for Dexter. Harry always talked like he understood how Dexters mind worked. I think inserting Vogel as a way to retcon some of our previous understood information is done far better than weve seen in other shows and movies. Though when it comes to retconning stuff its always met with split opinions. Wondering how you will feel toward other retcons considering how much you dislike this one if you will actually like other ones that most seem to hate. At the time this aired I recall news storyings making a big deal about Charlotte Rampling being in the show. Though shes definitely had some bad acting moments and delivery. I think we get more critical near the end of a show because we know its ending so we question a lot of choices we wouldnt have made. Like me personally I didnt HATE season 8 of GoT. Yes I thought it was rushed and could have been better but I am not on the train of "they need to rewrite, reshoot the WHOLE season" Now season2 of The Invisible Man on the other hand...... Cant help but wonder if the people responsible for that are behind a lot of the hateful F-the fans style writing we have going on today where they are taking beloved franchises and writing them in a way to just alienate and piss off the bulk of the fan base *cough* Discovery *cough* Picard
