It's no one's fault. It just happened. He wanted to be with Payton and when she rejected him he got together with Brooke, only to have Payton revealing that she was just scared of his feelings. I don't know how you make this Luke's fault but ok...

Primus

Agreed! It is his fault.

Terri

Yeah i see it from ur view and it just a messy situation in general and i usually just Blame lucas for playing them both and with they’re vulnerabilities

Magical Creature

Magical Creature Peyton and Lucas had some undertones going on since episode 1. The fact that Brooke kept asking Peyton if she liked Lucas tells you that she suspected that Peyton liked him. Then Peyton made out with him...even if she freaked out afterwards. Brooke wasn't clueless. She decided to go for him anyways despite the fact that nearly every other character on the show has commented on Lucas/Peyton being a thing....meaning they saw the connection too. So imo she was being a bad friend. I just wouldn't step on my friend's toes like that. Once I knew she liked a guy... especially if that guy liked her back...I wouldn't push the issue. Once the first kiss happened...that pretty much stamped "he's taken" on his ass as far as I would be concerned if it were my best friend. lol. Obviously Brooke knew Peyton liked Lucas or she wouldn't have felt the need to ask Peyton if it was okay she was dating Lucas. She also wouldn't feel the need to keep asking and being somewhat jealous of their relationship if she didn't know there was something there. That's just my opinion though. I don't really blame Brooke much for this. She's young and I think she really liked Lucas. Yeah, that early 2000's era pretty much explains why Brooke is this archetype. Honestly... all three of their behaviors (Brooke, Peyton and Lucas) all show their age and immaturity in handling relationships. Lucas really was the worst in the situation imo. He plays them both.

Terri

Exactly. People are acting like Brooke is clueless. Brooke knows what's going on. She just might not want to admit it to herself. She got invested in things with Lucas and she hopes it will work out. However, all the other characters essentially hint that she's a placeholder for Peyton. It's actually Luke's fault really. He was confessing how much he was into Peyton in one episode and then the next he decided to rebound with Brooke when Peyton rejected him. He couldn't have been really over Peyton at this point. He basically used Brooke for "fun" and a rebound and that's shitty. I always love how fans get divided over Brooke and Peyton and rarely blame Lucas in the situation. Deep down...he freaking knows he is using Brooke too. That's why he keeps going over to Peyton's house and seeking her out all the time at school. He knows he's still into her! Still...I can't see why people blame Peyton in this too much. She just was scared of getting into something serious, which is understandable with her past. She freaks out and then later reconsiders. However, by this point....her best friend, who definitely at least knew Peyton and Lucas had something...or she would never have ask if Peyton was alright with them dating, had moved in on Lucas. Like I said though...it's really not either of the girl's fault. It's Luke's fault.

Terri

Honestly, at this point, it's obvious that Peyton likes Lucas and Lucas likes Peyton. Peyton just confessed that she wants to be with Lucas two episodes ago, and Lucas declared that he wants to be with Peyton four episodes ago. I get that he does like Brooke, but he doesn't seem as invested in the relationship as she does and they all seem nonchalant about their own feelings. It's super frustrating. Also, if Brooke is feeling insecure about Peyton and Lucas spending time together... she definitely must know, or at least THINK that Peyton actually likes Lucas as more than a friend. Or else, why would she think it's awkward to ask her about Lucas?

I Am Not Chamari

That's because everyone got the vibe that Brooke only wanted to sleep with Lucas, not date him. Haley said something similar as well that Brooke is not the dating type. It's hella problematic but the early 2000's + the awful showrunner allows me to understand why the girls talked about Brooke in that way. But even then, it's not hard to see why Peyton and Haley would think that things wouldn't get serious with Brooke and Lucas. Peyton knows Brooke's relationship history and that she didn't care about anyone like that before. I definitely don't blame Peyton for that.

I Am Not Chamari

I agree with u on everything except the girl code that depends on the people and Brooke also has been eyeing Lucas since the beginning but Peyton didn’t take her seriously like she almost never does when brooke talks about relationships she even said to hailey “its brooke it’s not gonna last” and i know we can’t blame peyton because she is just in high school doesn’t maybe understand emotions well and neither does Brooke. So when she asked Peyton repeatedly is she interested in Lucas Peyton said no on multiple occasions so she went for it cuz she thought Peyton just maybe wanted a rebound or smthn. In this scenario the only person maybe to blame is Lucas who still clings on to Peyton when he has a gf sorry for the mini rant😅

Magical Creature

Brooke even asking Payton (either this episode or the last one) right out front if she is okay with her and Lucas shows she knew Payton liked him before. Also...imo the girl code doesn't have to be just if someone dated someone. I don't go after guys my friends either like or have made out with. It's just kind of tacky imo. Heck...even Nathan could see that Lucas/Payton had something. Hayley also pointed it out very early on in the series. So there is no way Brooke didn't pick up on it. Now...I don't dislike Brooke for this. I just think she is kind of like season 1 Caroline in The Vampire Diaries for those of you that watch that show. It gives her character a great place to start some amazing growth. You guys seemed shocked that Brooke and Lucas were dating after sleeping together. Remember...1. they are in high school 2. this is early 2000's when sex wasn't as casual as today. Usually sex in high school back at this time definitely meant you were dating. In fact, it was assumed...you didn't even need to "define the relationship." Things have changed quite a lot since then. I've actually noticed that it's hard for you guys to put the show in the context of early 2000's sometimes. For example, when Luke was confessing his feelings to Payton...you guys thought it was way too much. However, back then there wasn't this game played where people try to keep the relationship casual forever. Luke also was just telling her that he wanted more than a hookup...he wanted feelings to be involved. He did say it in an over-the-top way, so I get your reaction. In the context of today's world...it definitely feels like too much too soon. However, back then it wasn't that way. Payton ran off because she wasn't ready to be vulnerable and admit how she feels yet. Remember "people always leave" Payton and she had trouble letting anyone in. She wasn't ready to let Lucas in. I also want to point out...I like what the show did for the last few episodes. Did anyone notice that Luke is acting more like Nathan was in the beginning and Nathan is now acting more like Lucas? It's a fun role reversal. Lucas is getting into fights with Keith and doing stuff we all know his mom would NEVER approve of.

Terri

The guy with the baby is named Jake :) I don't think there are feelings between Peyton and Jake. I just think it's more about how Peyton is seeing Jake with his child and admiring him for what a great job he is doing. I'm sure it's also because of her never seeing her own dad and that whole situation. I think Brooke is right when she said that Lucas wants the best of both worlds. I think he should step back from Peyton a little because it's obviously making Brooke feel more insecure and Peyton just confessed her feelings for him so he knows that both girls like him. I don't think it's fair of him but he is young so i don't think he realises what he is doing. I also still feel like Brooke knows that Peyton likes Lucas and that's affecting her too. She sees how much Peyton and Lucas have in common and that makes her question why he is with her etc.

Caroline

They mentioned Brooke's parents once in 1x08 where they were watching Peyton after she's been drugged and Brooke just said that her parents would rather throw money at her than spend any time with her. That is all we know by now.

I think Peyton was very overwhelmed by Lucas in 1x06 bc feeling something "real" means she has to put her walls down and be vulnerable which Peyton is not very good at ever since her mother died. So it wasn't that she doesn't want to be in a serious relationship with Lucas or anyone else, it was more so that it scares her a little. But her progression as a character is incredible. That goes for all the OTH characters, they all grow so much.

thisismaria27

I was annoyed with Lucas in this episode, constantly popping up around Peyton all the time, I was always thinking, couldn't he give her a little bit of space, she did confess her feelings for him not that long ago, feelings don't generally just disappear overnight, so it would be great if he gave her some space. Also, the look he was giving Peyton when she was drawing after he gave her the CD back, he chose Brooke he shouldn't really be looking at Peyton like that, plus I didn't love the kind of nonchalant way he talked to Brooke when she was confessing her anxieties and fears to him, I always felt worried for her, she was confessing how scared she was and he was acting like it wasn't a big deal and her fears were unfounded, I always thought he better not hurt her, I don't think Brooke was wrong when she said Lucas was trying to have the best of both worlds. Also, that moment between Dan and Nathan, Dan might be a character that is really easy to hate but Paul Johansson plays him so well and brings a lot to his character.

i really enjoyed this episode. you're right, it is slower, but i think it's really well done in how it's setting things up and as i watch it again for the however many times i've seen it now, i realize just how much the slow, heavy tone of it all really reflects the emotions that are taking place. the best way i can describe it is sort of this slow heaviness. there isn't really anything flashy or funny that sticks out, but it really shows the heaviness of what all is happening between dan, deb and nathan and also peyton brooke and lucas. also it really stood out to me just how much of a partnership nathan and hailey's relationship is, as it should be. the way he kind of had this wake up moment seeing her grade and pulling her aside to tell her that he doesn't want her to lose herself. it was such a moment of maturity that i really enjoyed seeing. but i always get super emo over he and hailey any way lol

The reason that Nathan started getting tutoring for his grades, was to raise them enough that he could stay eligible for sports.
