I get it. They really could have done a much better job with Xander. I mean, good points, the guys risks his life to help when he has no power all the time. He's saved each character and the world countless times. All the characters are flawed, yet he always comes out looking so bad. I really hated how little they focused on his home life. Like, we finally actually get to see what his home life is like at Hell's Bells. With all the flaws his character has built in from his crappy home life, they really should have been showing that since at least season 2 for them to expect anybody to give him sympathy or at least empathy. Even in Hell's Bells, they show that the reason he didn't go through with it, was because he viewed himself as a bigger monster than Anya was when she was a demon, yet they rush through it. They don't give it the focus it needs. Of course, I really hated that they had his character go that path anyways. As the season 4 finale said, he's ended up just being the shows whipping boy.

2021-08-02 10:42:41 +0000 UTCAnya was grading on a curve. She really needed to explore her options after she became human

2021-07-12 10:12:13 +0000 UTCDid he actually apologize? Seemed like he was just telling her how hurt he was about what he had done. He acknowledged that he shouldn't have waited until the wedding but I don't think he actually apologized

2021-07-12 10:07:23 +0000 UTCSPOILER yea… there is. i watched like 6 other reactors and two of them said they got spoiled by the op.

2021-07-03 14:42:14 +0000 UTCYeah, Xander is Joss' self-insert. More like a major self-own :/

2021-06-30 02:42:27 +0000 UTCI hate Xander more and more every time I rewatch Buffy. He's been an entitled asshole from the beginning, it's just harder to ignore by this point in the series. Oh and now that we know that Joss Whedon is also an entitled asshole, it makes so much sense how Xander was meant to be this likeable character but is actually so problematic. This is actually what Joss thinks is a good guy.

2021-06-28 13:14:58 +0000 UTCI think I'll play devil's advocate for Xander. While I do agree it was bad what he did leaving Anya at the altar he expressed regret and apologized in this and instead of either giving it another chance or just saying its over she immediately goes out and tries to literally get him killed and turns around sleeps with some body else. Personally I think that is worse than Xander being angry and disgusted she slept with a Soulless Mass Murdering Vampire.

2021-06-23 04:13:00 +0000 UTCYes, please don’t skip the opening credits for next episode! There are no spoilers, so not sure why this individual would say that.

2021-06-17 07:49:01 +0000 UTCI know I am in the minority, but speaking of toxic relationships, I’ve never been a fan of Tara and Willow reconciliation. What happened between, especially what Willow did to her was impactful enough to deserve an onscreen heartfelt apology. We never got that, only Willow feeling sorry for herself and Tara miraculously forgiving her. The same dynamic with someone else involve than cute Willow and it would certainly be perceived differently.

2021-06-17 04:24:11 +0000 UTChe should definitely skip them - SPOILERS!!!

2021-06-16 23:59:29 +0000 UTCSpike wasn’t being a jackass, he was responding to Xander’s insults. He knows he can’t fight back with punches so he fight back with his words. And Buffy told him earlier that she was ok if he told her friends that they were sleeping together.

2021-06-16 12:45:31 +0000 UTCRe- Xander. You are looking at him as a stranger would. Try looking at him as family, someone you have grown up with and seen his faults as well as his virtues all his life. I have a brother with massive faults and wonderful virtues. I recognize when he does wrong but I still feel his pain, even when he brings it on himself thru bad acts.

2021-06-16 08:43:11 +0000 UTCSpike does do some nice things too. Just like trying to cheer up Anya by telling her Xander was an ass. I think he helped her more than all the rest of the group. I'm not even talking about the hooking up part either. Totally on both of their sides here.
Terri
2021-06-16 06:37:57 +0000 UTCDon't skip the opening credits on the next episode. :)

2021-06-15 22:47:16 +0000 UTCThe heartbreaking thing, is that anya really didn’t have any friends, only xander. You need one friend to be totally on your side in a time like this!

2021-06-15 20:44:43 +0000 UTCTo be fair, Buffy made a slightly cutting remark. On the whole she's been treating him better lately- in fact her dumping him is about her respecting the more human part of him. Spike can feel slightly miffed about her remark, that's fine. I think it's easy to be on both their teams, at this very precise moment in time. But that's not in the same league as the bile Xander just spewed at Anya. Against a backdrop of him hurting her very deeply. I just don't think it's in the same league. Team Anya all the way!

2021-06-15 16:44:12 +0000 UTCi don't know a single person who watched this episode and was team xander lol. it's kinda hard to be on the side of someone who left his fiance at the alter.

2021-06-15 15:31:31 +0000 UTCTeam Anya and Spike in this episode. Xander had left Anya at the altar and Buffy had told Spike she doesn't want to be with him anymore. Buffy and Xander can take several seats with their nonsense in this episode.

2021-06-15 15:25:05 +0000 UTCTotally agree. Unfortunately, being slut shamed by an ex who traumatised you with terrible treatment is very relatable content. But what's super heart-breakjng here when you think about it, is that it's his fear of being like his father, (who hurts people -his wife- with his anger, resentment and disrespect) that made him run away from his wedding, and the minute he's confronted with a situation with Anya that he doesn't like, he acts exactly like his father- with an uncontrolled anger and by belittling Anya. Knowing these ways of thinking and acting are toxic doesn't necessarily mean he can snap himself out of them. Ugh. Anyway I'm glad Anya was able to articulate her very appropriate rage in this moment.

2021-06-15 13:06:54 +0000 UTC100% agree with your entire take on this ep. Xander has always been annoyingly self-righteous and judgemental towards others while staying blind to the extent of his own flaws. I've only really liked him ("liked" is a stretch; "been able to enjoy him as a comedic figure" would be more accurate) in season 4 - perhaps he's only a nice-ish person when he's feeling deeply insecure about his entire direction in life...? Because he was definitely less focused on pointing out the perceived shortcomings of everyone around him in season 4 than he was/is in all other seasons. Maybe not with respect to Anya, though. He still treated her like crap in season 4. Anyway, back to this ep. Spike did nothing wrong (in this instance), who Buffy sleeps with is between her and that person, and Anya *especially* did nothing wrong. What even gives Xander the idea that he has the right (or the moral high-ground...) to feel disgusted with either Buffy or Anya? Or that who they sleep with is literally any of his business? Buffy isn't his gf (he wishes - still) and he left Anya at the f*cking alter. He comes across as so pathetic in this episode, for real.

2021-06-15 10:49:43 +0000 UTCWow you know it’s a show right
2021-06-15 10:32:03 +0000 UTCI actually disagree. I think he should definitely skip the intro. Another reactor mentioned that watching the opening credits was a big spoiler for them and they wished they weren't told to watch them. So I'd say skip it and go in blind.

2021-06-15 10:19:58 +0000 UTCXander has ALWAYS been this way. But Steven has always been loving him despite all of his entitled self. It’s the one thing I HATED in these reactions. I was so scared that when he left her at the altar, Steven was gonna be like...I’m still Team Xander cuz I get it. I’M SO GLAD THAT’S NOT THE CASE. YES, WELCOME TO THE REVELATION THAT XANDER IS AN ASSHOLE, STEVEN, WELCOME!!!!!

2021-06-15 09:49:33 +0000 UTCI have a love hate relationship with Xander. I dont want anything bad to happen to him, but he is such an ass. Pretty much agree with all the comments above #teamanya

2021-06-15 09:16:56 +0000 UTCOh I actually loved The Nevers, btw. I need more episodes ASAP after that finale.
Andrea
2021-06-15 08:00:43 +0000 UTCI loved Xander in the first few seasons, I think because he genuinely made me laugh. But as he grew up he became more of an entitled ass and says shit I don't agree with.
Nikita Pascari
2021-06-15 07:42:48 +0000 UTCAlso, I started watching the Nevers and unfortunately I found it so boring. If someone has seen all of it let me know if it gets better. I stopped at episode 4. I fell asleep 2 while trying to get through it.

2021-06-15 07:38:21 +0000 UTCI was nervous how you would like this episode compared to the last episode. I'm always team Anya, Xander is the worst in my opinion. When Anya says that he. was nice to her, I'm like when? He's always correcting her or making her feel bad for being blunt. Anyway I cannot wait for the rest of the season! Can you just upload all 4 tomorrow? haha
Corey
2021-06-15 07:36:55 +0000 UTCI've hated Xander more on every rewatch from the very beginning, but on my VERY first watch, it took me until this episode to realize, "hey I'm not sure I like Xander very much anymore," lol. On subsequent watches it became clear this was part of a pattern of behavior for him that I grew to despise, which was there pretty much from Buffy/Angel in S1 onwards. But yeah Team Anya all the way, obviously.

2021-06-15 07:16:45 +0000 UTCI think that Anya couldn't get her friend to make the wish because she's also a vengeance demon so maybe it doesn't work like that. Also, I don't think Anya truly is the person she used to be with causing horrible pain to people even if it's what she knows. I got the feel that she didn't really want to go through with it in the end anyway. But yeah, Xander is pretty bad. He's very entitled and thinks everything is about him sometimes. I think Anya's behavior is very understandable and Xander needs to back off. I also like how quickly Willow and Dawn caught on that Buffy had a thing with Spike just from reading her hurt expression. Oh, and I adore that Willow and Tara ending.

2021-06-15 05:51:25 +0000 UTCXander is such a little bitch lmao.

2021-06-15 05:48:59 +0000 UTCGonna celebrate this rare occasion where Steven and I completely agree on something. On top of being great, this episode highlights my main problem with Xander. He feels entitled when it comes to his female friends. He doesn't even understand the ramifications of his own crappy behavior but feels he is in some kind of position to pass judgement on Anya and Buffy. I mean , Xander has always had an opinion about anyone Buffy was seeing. And he felt that opinion needed to be not only shared but also greatly considered. But in reality, it truly is none of his business. Like dude, we get it. You're still feeling some kind of way that she turned you down in season one. It all just reads like someone who has missed judged what they bring to the team at the end of the day.
