I think the role of a nanny depends on the household. Mel just noted that he didn’t even notice that Ryder was missing articles of clothing and Joe wasn’t cooking meals at one point in the episode, which is part of his job. He was starting to let looking for Louise take over. That’s how he started in episode 1. He showed up at Mel’s city council meeting thinking she knew where he was and even showed up at her house. So though they haven’t mentioned it in the last few episodes clearly it was still bothering Joe and was going to probably lead to him being obsessed with tracking him down.
