This episode really is a great example of what I love about Freaks and Geeks. The show starts out with these surface level stereotypes of characters that we see in so many other shows but that is only the beginning with this show. The opening scene of Daniel dealing with his mother wanting him to drop out of school and not believing in him is not the kind of thing we normally see in shows featuring burn-outs like Daniel. I appreciate that the show treats them like humans and not 2 dimensional jokes. As far as Neil's mother and her response to Neil... I feel like what she was saying is that her and Neil's dad don't want to disrupt Neil's life during his formative years. She is just soldiering on until Neil is grown and out of the house and then she can deal with Neil's dad whether that means leaving him or demanding he straighten up.
