You associate the word apothecary with Pottery Barn because of that Friends episode "The One with the Apothecary Table" when Phoebe hates Pottery Barn.

(Picture the dark-paneled stores in old movies, with one old gent handling the whole place.) David adopted the name to give his "general store" more of a stylish flair (remember, when they first met, Patrick said the name was "just pretentious enough"). The idea, as David explained things a couple of episodes back, is that they are selling locally produced goods, that otherwise the makers would be selling out of their own homes or farms. They seem to sell personal-care items, household items, things that have been sewn or knitted or grown, that sort of thing. Though I suspect the fruits & vegetables will be displayed out on the sidewalk, once they're open and the pace relaxes.
