2022-03-17 08:14:20 +0000 UTCIt also felt like this episode wanted to be a Sondheim tribute episode... but then it kind of... just... wasn't? I love both of Mercedes' songs, truly two of my favorite performances from her, especially Colorblind, but it felt like all of the Samcedes stuff wanted to be in a different episode? idk... it would have been nice if the entire episode was Sondheim songs.

2022-03-16 23:43:37 +0000 UTCI feel like it's pretty normal for artists to book jobs while in school. I work for an MFA program and people book jobs all the time. Sometimes they drop out and sometimes they choose to take a semester or year off to explore those opportunities. Rachel has a LEAD ROLE in a BROADWAY show. Broadway shows, bomb, sure, but this is a revival and definitely has potential to do well. Even if Rachel herself gets negative reviews, she has a lead Broadway credit at the age of 19? That's incredible and she should still be welcomed back into NYADA or whatever school she might want to return to. Rachel did a little too much on Kurt, but I also genuinely don't see how her quitting school is a problem? It doesn't even show that she's cocky or entitled, it is genuniely a reasonable thing to do if she doesn't feel supported by the school and is struggling too. Actually, wouldn't it have been worse for Rachel to flake on a Broadway show?? Like, the producer was clear about the technical week schedule and definitely wouldn't have made another exception. I wonder if the other students at NYADA who have gotten a role alongside their schoolwork have gotten lead roles where they are in every scene? lol I know it's fun to hate on Rachel sometimes as her character can be very grating, but she is living out her biggest dream right now and choosing that over school isn't a mistake AT ALL.

2022-03-16 21:26:11 +0000 UTCI might be in the minority but I love the serious tone the rest of season 5 takes. And I know it is probably bias because my favorite character is Mercedes and the rest of the season features her heavily. I do agree with David in that I can appreciate Rachel as the character that we follow but Rachel as a person is hard for me to root for with her selfishness and entitlement.

2022-03-16 14:15:17 +0000 UTCYeah (outside of her ending outburst to Kurt), Rachel actually the one who is correct in this episode. Madame Tibideaux view is that Rachel's good, but can improve with more school (something that is true and continues to be true long after someone's schooling actually ends). But here's the thing. Quitting Nyada doesn't mean Rachel can't ever go to school. You don't get blackballed for getting a career in your field, and quitting school. Even if the admissions decided to block her coming back to that school (which isn't very likely) there are hundreds in the world, not to mention all the universities that have performing art programs. School isn't her endgame, its a means to the end. She's got the job, she's been a broadway worker for months now. She is the front for a multi million dollar production, and its an abrogation of her duty to the production to not put her professional career over her education. Casandra last year in one of her few caring moments is completely supportive of her TA having to quit because he got a background roll in the business.. A scenery job. Not even a featured player. Rachel has got the lead. Now most productions will fail (its the nature of the business), but even if its a one and done (opens one night, closes the next) she has a credit. One that would open doors for schools and open doors for casting. Every arts school I seen will keep a record of those that got a job in their field (its one of the best ways to help get admissions). And even the greats in broadway have utter failures in their career. So one failure wouldn't hurt her (now a string of them would...) Now what's the downside if she doesn't prioritize her job? Well if you get a rap for jeopardizing a production...That wouldn't hurt her chance at an education, but it would absolutely get around through the various network of producers and casting agents. She would have an exceptionally difficult time recovering from that, especially doing so before the production even opened. I mean can you imagine being in film school, and getting picked to direct a major studio film. And can you imagine the studio reacting if you told them, sorry I can't make my call times, because I have classes I have to finish....You would be lucky to get a job after that. So yeah, Kurts wrong. How he handles his argument is wrong, he's giving her terrible advice. Now if this situation was over a call back. Well then he might have a point because you have basically would need to repeat (thus extra tuition costs), and since its a call back you don't have incoming revenue from it. But Rachel's been cashing checks since the end of the 2nd episode of this season and that includes a time job of months between 13 and 14. Now if this was Hollywood for example, and you are finally reading of the network (or studio) big wigs (that's generally the final callback) I thank I would still risk my schooling over that because that's very close (usually its you and one or two other finalists). But once I had a lead role. You quit school, period if it interferes. And as I mentioned at the beginning the only thing Rachel did wrong was how she handled herself with Kurt after Kurt absolutely didn't listen to reason. But just as Kurt could have handled things better, Rachel absolutely went personal on her attacks to him at the end. That is the only thing she was wrong about in the episode.
