He's completely evil, and he WANTS to take part of the covens sick ritual, has wanted to since his young days. Upbringing plays a part, but the degree of psycho he has turned out to be is purely his choice.

His dad is crazy about the coven and having his kids sacrifice themselves for magic. Imagine being born different from the norm and your dad automatically think you're an abomination. Then, he turns around and has multiple kids until he could have another set of twins because the first set were defective. The effect that would have on a developing adolescent is concerning! I mean, his father didn't see value in life or family over the coven, so it only makes since that one of his kids would have a blantant disregard for human life and only want power for his parents approval. I'm just a big psychology/literary analysis buff and thought the writer's did well fleshing out that character.
