They aren't getting to live their childhood and trying to make those adult decisions without fully developed brains is likely going to lead to later trauma. I'm curious on what happened to parenting. I'm in my 30's, but my parents expected better decisions from me at that age. They expected me to not engage in risky behavior. Idk...this is a sign that times pretty much suck.

2022-04-19 20:57:03 +0000 UTCSo yes the kid that Nate beat up is Tyler. Nate didn't steal his phone but he has been Jules for a while (even before the beating up happened). Now that Jules asked for his name he just said Tyler cuz he obviously can't say is him.

Yeah people don't in real life have snappy HBO dialogue ready to go about every illicit situation, but kids really do this stuff. They know about and use drugs from a much younger age now. High schoolers have sex when they want, with who they want, however they want. I'm from a suburban area in the southeast, and even though this show is basically set in California, it's so similar to where I live. I would figure Cali would be where you would normally believe to be the hot-bed of stuff like this (accurate or not), but this show is about as close to real life as you can get in my opinion about going to high school in most of America today, just shot and directed glamorously.

2022-04-19 04:15:35 +0000 UTCAgree fully. Hope Steven reads and maybe changes his mentality from "they're all the worst, evil people" to seeing a maybe more nuanced view over the next couple of eps. I see it as a few of them are legitimately abusers/false accusers, a few are just high school drug users/partiers/intensely sexually driven, and a few are just there observing the rest of them.

2022-04-19 04:06:25 +0000 UTCi agree with you that hardly any of the characters are likable. i find it really hard rooting for rue as well because at this point she is just so despicable. but that is largely in part due to her drug addiction. drug addicts are dishonest, manipulative, sneaky, selfish, etc because their need to get high fuels all of their actions/choices. i would say if you're not fully on board with the show by the end of episode 4, this might not be the show for you. im sure others will want to see you finish out the series/both seasons, but i'd only be interested in seeing you watch the show if you actually enjoy it and aren't cringing through 80% of it like you have been so far lol.

So.. at this point, it seems like Nate is just taking Tyler's name to talk to Jules (and also, making up fiction about his own life). It's his way of forging a connection, I guess. Jules doesn't know "Tyler" is Nate, but just like many people, is connecting with someone on a dating app. I find it interesting how you said every character is horrible. I think this show really interrogates what makes a good or bad person. A few bad decisions? Many bad decisions over the years? Being Nate Jacobs? Here's my current take on every character. Rue: Is Rue currently a good person? No. But, for me, that's because she has an addiction that is literally altering her brain chemistry, her ability to make sound decisions and her actions. The drugs are preventing her from being herself and who she really is, which sure, will always be an addict, but also just might be a good person. I think Rue has learned how to shut off her mind and all the bad stuff(with the help of drugs) and that's why some of her reactions after overdosing might seem too light or jovial (I do genuinely think she was trying to cheer Gia up as well). But, drugs for her, will always be an obsessive and compulsory need to escape all the negative emotions and feelings that plagued her all of her life. Her dad dying being at the center of it, but also her preexisting mental illnesses. Nate: Literally the worst person ever lol I think him (and Cal) are the only irredeemable characters on the show and it's wild to think we really haven't gotten into a lot of it yet. But, we've seen enough ready. He is very much a psychopath. Kat: I actually like Kat. The worst thing she's done so far is manipulate the principal with a fake sob story so he could make the rumor stop spreading. I thought it was funny lol That dude shouldn't have recorded her without her consent and sent it to everyone. My girl had to do damage control lol Jules: She really hasn't done anything either yet that makes her a bad person in my eyes. She hooked up with an older guy at a motel. Sure, sketchy, but she is young and clearly has done these kinds of things before. Trans women have to move through the world differently. She also did drugs with a drug addict, which is... a no-no, but eh, they just met. A lapse of judgment. Maddy: This is a tough one. I'll say I don't like Maddy at this point. It's incredibly shitty to lie about being sexually assaulted, but I don't think she just said that to be evil. We've seen what Nate could do in this episode. She could have been genuinely afraid of what he would do to her. And, to be fair, Tyler was at a high school party and was surprised that the girl he was with was a minor? He should have known better too. And no, this is not me saying that he deserved to be beaten to a pulp. And no, this is not me saying what Maddy did wasn't fucked up. When you're dealing with high schoolers, it is important to provide that context, however. McKay: Eh.... he's okay lol I thought it was interesting how he got upset with Cassie for being horny earlier in the day but now expects nudes promptly because he's horny. Like, isn't that just reinforcing to Cassie that her value is in her body and being sexy? Him being in college is also a little weird. So, eh, not the biggest fan of him. Cassie: Haven't gotten much of Cassie, but she's cool! It makes sense that so much of her worth is being placed on her sexuality, because that's all men have used her for. That's how she's gotten close to everyone. In a weird way, it's kind of how she shows love - it's what she's been taught to do. Lexi: My bestie! Love her! Fez: My other bestie. Love him!
