I completely disagree with you. I remember being incredibly disappointed in this series specifically for the reason you loved it - the tonal shift. House was somber and serious and explored deeper themes in a sardonically humorous way. His engagements with his team and patients were meaningful and although the development was glacial due to the show being 20+ episodes per season, it felt very authentic. This season becomes a borderline sitcom. That’s not to say there are no good episodes - the two part season finale are some of the best episodes of the show, but overall, House’s development and indeed the development of his old team are ultimately lost.

Every time there's a list of best seasons, I never seen season 4 lower than top 3. Next season is just as good. The tonal change in this season elevated House from pretty good to epic for me. And it's a huge change I never saw before. So much different than season 3 and it's not only for a couple of episodes like most shows do change. It's going to last until the end of the series. It's pretty awesome. If you can I would really suggest you do next to episodes back to back. You'll see why once you start watching.
