Just upgraded so I can watch this and I loved your reaction! I agree that the pacing is quick, but it was quick throughout, so it didn't really bother me. Felt purposeful and possibly trying to emulate the speed of comedy/farce/slapstick. In terms of relationship development, it is also very Shakesperean. Half of the characters would be married by now lol This is a straight up adaptation of Shakespeare's "comedy" The Taming of the Shrew, and probably my favorite adaptation ever made. Basically, in the play the characters of Petruchio (Heath Ledger in the movie) is tasked with taming Katherina (Julia Stiles) into becoming a proper and obedient woman. He basically puts her through psychological and physical torment. Then the subplot of Bianca, the younger sister, being desirable and the ideal woman, is a competition between the suitors. I think this movie took the premise and really made it work remarkably well in the high school context, without it feeling too icky and misogynistic. It's messed up, definitely, but it works and actually still holds up in a lot of ways??? (And in some ways, doesn't, but nothing was too incredibly offensive). I actually really liked how they both embarrassed themselves majorly. It's usually one party or the other, but they both made fools of themselves. And I liked the choice about how quickly it resolved. Especially because we got the whole Kat is mad at Patrick thing earlier in the movie. I liked how the ending was a more sad/disappointed take with a quick turnaround. Another reason I like this movie is that all of the characters are so colorful and most are quite funny and well thought out. I don't think Bianca is likeable either, but she is quite young at 16, which I think causes her to be very fickle and care so much about these high school rituals And honestly, I understand why she was upset for Kat not telling her about Joey. That is definitely information she should know. I think a better way of protecting her would be to let her know who Joey really is and if she still wanted to be with him, or didn't think he would want the same thing, that's on her. And honestly, it still was on her because I think she believed that Joey was genuinely into her.
