I watched this movie for the first time last year and I LOVED it. It's just a really well-made movie that has a deep respect for the classics in the genre, but also, paved its own way too. That's why I like the misdirect reveal - we all thought this was going to be a classic whodunnit, and it kind of was. But while we were all focused on the murder, the real "whodunnit" was who hired the detective and orchestrated this entire thing. Regarding Daniel Craig's accent... it was a strong choice that was probably going to be divisive. It's a bit distracting, but worked for me because it was humorous and played well into the archetype. The throw-up is disgusting, but it was weird enough that it worked well in the movie.

2022-02-16 16:39:46 +0000 UTCI disagree with this take. The film critiques white liberalism just as much as it critiques conservatism. And both portrayals are quite accurate. And if their obvious "stance" is just having their main character be undocumented, then sure, they took a stance on it and honestly, good for them. Movies should have a point of view on these issues as Mike Smith said. Also, what does it even mean to be "racial" Also, a lot of the point of this movie is supposed to be a classic story with a twist. So, of course, we're going to see some tropes including how it deals with class and The Haves vs. The Have Nots. I always thought this film was more bold and complex in its storytelling. The characterizations of the family and Marta herself, were actually quite intricate and different from past tropes dealing with rich white families.

It took a very obvious political stance on illegal immigration and their portrayal of conservatives that only racial liberal sjws would defend. The storytelling was not great. Just the typical portrayal of rich white families and poor poc

The family was very deliberately drawn to sprawl across ideologies and political affiliations to show how entitlement, selfishness and elitism AREN'T tied to any one ideology. Moreover a movie about race and classism will have a POV on those topics. It's the theme of the movie, the message is the whole purpose for the story. That's why storytelling as an art form exists to communicate the perspective of the storyteller.

Starts as a whodunnit, evolves into sort of a ‘heist’ movie where you’re rooting for the guilty party to get away with it, and then back to a whodunnit. There’s a ton of little things that you see and figure out upon further viewing as well that make it even more fun.

2022-02-14 16:27:58 +0000 UTCI could gush about this movie for hours. So many things tie together and come back around. So many things are set into motion early on and follow through. I will name just the few that come to mind immediately. The baseball that the husband throws out the window when he "realizes" Harlan was messing with him goes around picked up by Blanc and goes through the dogs and eventually Linda sees it and recognizes it and returns it so she sees the letter. The husbands little petty tantrum got him caught in the end. Blanc also DOES look down at Marta's shoes when they first meet, I remember going back to check because I was curious. There's also a bunch of great metaphors, like the game of Go and how Marta says she wins because she doesnt play to win but to create beautiful patterns. She was essentially playing against Ransom and he was clearly making plays and was trying to end up on top while Marta wasn't even really aware she was playing she was just doing her thing and that's why she "won". Theres a bunch of things that you caught on to too, like the "Ransom wouldn't know the difference between a prop and the real thing", and the dogs bark at him when he first arrives at the Will Reading. Idk I'm going on tangents but essentially every little thing they brought up had purpose, and I love that. I remember when watching it for the first time I felt there was an awkward moment where Ransom is like "weird the blackmailer didnt give a time and place, you sure you've checked everything, texts... emails..?" and then Marta is like oh yeah lets check email. I thought it was lazy writing or something, then when it becomes clear he's the killer and he needed her to show up to the place he said in the email I realized it wasnt some awkward forced writing, it was a clue. Just... just a damn good movie.

They're all a bunch of racist, elitist assholes and I'm including Meg, who is the kind of elitist who pretends that she's "fighting for the people" but in actuality is very content in her rich white privileged bubble. Thanks for the reaction, Steven. This was awesome. Can't wait to see what other movies you react to. Hope Brian reacts to Harry Potter. Wonder if David will react to any movies? I think he mentioned last year he had some interest in it but maybe his schedule is too packed...either way, love this channel. Keep it up, guys!!
