Yeah for the show, the Black wind is feeding on what the individual fears deep within. In the first episode we do see a few big hints that Perrin has feelings towards Egwene. When Egwene is having her right of passage into adulthood, Perrin's wife doesn't attend. Nor does she attend the celebration after. And Nyneave basically lets him know he should be home. When he gets home his wife is distant, and takes a moment to relax in his arms. This was a huge sign that she feels that she wasn't Perrins first choice. And this makes so much legitimate sense. They are in a village of probably several hundred, there aren't going to be many people of close to the same age as the 4 who are 20. Perrin is by nature a shy and quite person. He sees that one of his best friends is also attractive to Egwene, so he doesn't make and obvious advances and once Egwene lets it be known that she likes Rand that it. He buries it, and moves on to someone he likes but that he is going to have to hope to grow into a love. This happens, especially in small isolated communities all the time. The person you have your first "love" doesn't necessarily have any of those feelings and you learn to move on from it. Once he wife is killed, his guilt over the action feeds into his deepest fears. What if I did it and subconsciously was trying to get her out of the way. That of course isn't true but his guilt twist in his soul. Now none of that happens in the book as they are several years younger and its just getting to the point that Egwene and Rand would likely start to date when they take off on the quest. But one of the key pillars to Perrin's character is that he is terribly afraid that he is going to hurt someone, and its almost all internal thoughts that a book can do, but tv not so much. So having him be shown to accidentally kill someone close to him, lets the viewer see this character trait quickly and its utterly believable because its one of the most powerful thangs that could happen.
