I agree with you that the story of the lawyer in the new motel was kind of a nothing plot for them. They can check it out easily, though, if it really is in their contract with the old owners. I do love Alexis having Steve remain maid of honor "because she needs it more." That's a further sign of growth for her, and it touches me every time. And yes, the father "giving away" at a wedding is a traditional thing, but the whole idea is sort of an antiquated relic of the days when brides moved directly from their father's house to the groom's. Very often now, it's simply a gesture of walking down the aisle together -- we often don't hear the officiant ask "Who gives this woman?" any more. With David being 30, and not a bride, it makes sense to shake up tradition a little and have the two of them walk in together.
