Maddy was never my favorite, but my heart broke for her this episode. Just like many girls and women in real life and on this show, she's had all of these sexually abusive/grooming relationships with older men that have colored her experiences. And now, she finds herself in a trauma bond with Nate. I do not think it can be overstated how much being in a trauma bond, dramatically affects your brain chemistry and your decision-making. People hate to confront the question of "Why don't women just walk away?" in abusive relationships? Sure, fearing for their lives plays a big role, but a lot of women in these situations feel deeply embarrassed and humiliated, confused and powerless, that they learn that the only choice they have is to stay. I do think this episode does a decent, albeit, cursory job, of a teenager being in this situation, Overall, I think Maddy is a good example of not being "the perfect victim." So much of the time, we want to see domestic violence stories play out as the poor, defenseless battered woman and when someone isn't exactly that, suddenly, our empathy (sympathy, really) disappears. We then asked how the woman provoked her partner to do this to her, how she instigated the situation and how she contributed to the volatile relationship. These are never the questions we should be asking. I'm not saying we have to like Maddy as a character - I certainly didn't in Season 1. But likeability has nothing to do with her being the victim in a destructive abusive relationship. And maybe it is because I knew people like Maddy in high school or maybe current news has me realize how much we as a society SUCK at discourse surrounding domestic violence , but I do really believe that even though she's a fictional character, Maddy deserved our empathy this episode, and it is a shame she didn't get it.

2022-05-28 17:49:48 +0000 UTCi agree with you. i find maddy insufferable as a character. she has a lot of really heinous traits that are extremely off putting imo. it's okay to acknowledge this while also acknowledging she is a victim in an abusive relationship and doesn't deserve the abuse she's enduring from nate. both things can be true.

Maddy isn’t the best character in season 1 but I will say she’s doesn’t deserve any of the stuff that has happened to it’s because she has no self esteem around nate. He manipulates her to get her to do what he wants .she depends on him for a lot of things. I think maddy is that girl that speaks her mind and is confident, she’s bold and doesn’t care what people think and that comes across to people like she’s mean and terrible but to me the writers are trying to compare and contrast how she is by herself and how she is with Nate.

2022-05-17 02:49:53 +0000 UTCyes that’s how it is to be in an abusive relationship. i hope maddy grows on you in season two. it’s not that she wants to be in an abusive relationship but she really does love nate and depends on him for comfort. like they said when they first started dating he was sweet so she fell in love with that side of him and it’s very difficult to leave a toxic relationship. i cannot wait for season two we need more episodes!!!!
