Spikes comment about no longer being under anybody's spell is referring to Spike no longer being trigged and vamping out (something we knew he was going and found out about in "Sleeper". That song that his mom used to sing was his trigger to make him into a monster and bypass his "soul" but after the confrontation with Wood and Spike facing his demons he is no longer acted by the song and no longer triggered.

2022-06-15 01:58:24 +0000 UTCeveryone in this episode is acting from a place of biased self interest. even buffy. she didn't run to save spike at the end of the episode solely because of the "mission". she saved him because of her own personal feelings for him. even though being controlled by the first made him a huge risk...she still wouldn't let him die. she didn't know his trigger had been deactivated when she went to save him. wood was definitely acting selfishly too...seeking revenge for what happened to his mom. but buffy was acting from a selfish place too and i feel like that's not really pointed out much when people talk about this episode. it's not the "mission that matters"...like she claims at the end of the episode. it's her personal feelings that took priority here.

2022-06-14 14:18:34 +0000 UTCThe way I interpret it, when you become a vampire and lose your soul in the Buffyverse, the demon who takes over retains all your memories and life experience and amplifies your "weakest" character traits by essentially preying on and inverting them - so Angel, who as a human was the ultimate underachiever whose father assured him would amount to nothing, became the most overachieving force of evil the vampire world has known, determined to live large and make something of himself, who spited his father by killing him. Spike was a true romantic, fully devoted to the women in his life, so as a soulless vampire, he became a true obsessive. So in the case of Spike's mother, she really did love her son, but he was also her greatest worry/burden since she knew she was all he had and was nearing the end of her life, so when she became a vampire, that worry became resentment. That's the way I've always seen it, anyway. "Caring" is the ultimate no-no for soulless demons, so whatever you cared most about as a human, the demon's gonna take that and run with it in a direction that the Human! You wouldn't have liked. I really do love the character of Robin Wood, btw. I totally shipped him and Buffy back in the day, lol.

2022-06-14 00:47:15 +0000 UTCHe's the victim of having to be written as an Edward after the Buffy/Spike relationship wound up happening. Once old monsters becomes a desired boyfriend, he has to get softened up otherwise they look bad for wanting her to be with a jerk. Sad, but happens a lot with WB/CW shows. I think it'd be cool if Buffy just didn't wind up with a vamp in general, but that's not the Twilight fantasy (which stole from this whole series tbh).

2022-06-13 23:57:22 +0000 UTCTHIs is why spike is a wierd vampiere. He was a weak human, an extremely cruel vampier who also was like a weak lost puppy sometimes. And he was nothing like angel after getting his soul. The cold lack of emphaty, lack of agony when facing Wood, the lack of thirst for redemption. THE only thing consistent is that he is always thesidekick, he never really grows up.
