I'm on Steven's side with this one. I never understood the hype around this episode. I never liked the one-life-exchanges-for-another theme anyway because it appears to be so random. Also Jor-El randomly revoking and granting Kryptonian powers to people and his son and now pulling out this one-use only time crystal. And why did Jonathan have to die only to give Clark guilt for years to come? He was alive and well in 1993 Lois & Clark show, I would've prefered that. And Jonathan dying like that? Clark has brought countless people to the Smallville ER but this time we just watch as Jonathan crumbles before our eyes, because the plot demands it.

Everyone was behaving so weirdly out of character that the writers were basically showing their hand that none of this would stick. That was just...sloppy to me, for lack of a better word. There was no reason the first half of this episode needed to be as forced and unbelievable as it was. If it had played more naturally, it would have worked a lot better, imo. I was glad Jonathan died of a simple heart-attack and didn't go out in a blaze of glory saving Clark or something though, because that's the way it goes in the comics and is a huge moment in Clark's journey - learning that for all his great power, he can't control nature, he can't save everyone, and some things are just completely beyond his control. The mundanity of Jonathan's death is what's so cruel and heartbreaking about it. I almost feel like this episode did it a disservice by trying to build it up so much with the fight with Lionel and high drama all that. It didn't need to be an "epic" moment.

2022-06-16 21:46:16 +0000 UTCLongggg time patron, and I've said it before, this channel has far more reactions than the average channel, and that makes it worth being a member of. But don't get too hyped up about episodes or moments you love, because it really is a toss up on whether it will land. Quantity, not quality, reactions. And I'm not trying to be mean by saying that, I've just never really seen other reactors look away when watching a reaction, it's just not something that happens. Steven is convinced it didn't affect his views on this episode, and I won't take that away from him. But that doesn't change how often it's a problem. He can't know when he's approaching an episode people are looking forward to, that would be a spoiler in itself, so he can't know when it's important to not ruin the viewers experience by facing his phone for large chunks of time in an episode they're excited about. The solution, would be for that not to happen at all, but as I said, been here a while, so I won't hold my breath.

I also get why Lex gets angry. They then breeze through the whole Crystal thing and bringing Lana back thing. I did like the moments she had with Lex to me that was by far the best part of the episode. I also liked the stuff with Johnathan and Lionel. The build up of hatred for him was there. I just think that Johnathan death was so meh to me. He did not doing something heroic, not telling Clark something important, not Kicking Lionel ass but yelling at him and walking away and having a heart attack. To me that is not interesting. They also didn't let the moment sit with us or the characters. He dies, we have Clark and Martha speak for about 1 min (where Clark doesn't even cry or feel like he is even really sad) and then we move on to the funeral. I wanted to feel something when he died and I felt nothing. I should have felt something considering Johnathan is one of my favorite characters.

I went back and watched Episode 11 & 12 Back to back to see if it flowed better and to me it improved it a little. I get Clark was worried about Lana leaving him and he proposed but what bothers me is Lana saying yes. It makes no sense to me. The choice to tell Lana, show her the fortress, and propose and tell the parents (Whose reaction was out of character for them in my opinion) all happens in 10 mins. Even Lois tell Lana she wont find anyone better than Clark was so odd. Does not feel like her character and for her to be the reason Lana says yes its odd because to me Lois and Lana are not crazy close yet she took her advice over other people she respects. I also didn't love that we didnt see much more of the build up to the election from Lex side. Also nothing about the Sheriff being killed in this episode. We go right into celebration time.

Jonathan needs to die by heart attack, or some other unpreventable thing, not having a heroic death saving someone. Jonathan Kent embodies in the Superman mythos what it means to be a good, truly good human man. He is the reason that Superman exists and is a moral hero. It can only be right for him to die in a way where Clark can’t just punch the bad guys to win. He can’t outrun, outfly, out-punch, or out-think a heart attack. Clark needs to learn the lesson that you can’t save everyone. Some people, a lot of people he loves or cares about or tries to save will die. But that doesn’t mean you stop trying, and it doesn’t mean you can ask Jor-El to use some dangerous magic fix to prevent death and suffering. Clark Kent becomes the Superman not because he’s an alien, the son of some great ruler and future leader of Earth, but because he’s the son of some backwoods Kansas farm hick that taught Clark that being a good man is better than being a great one.

2022-06-15 14:47:10 +0000 UTCThis episode has a 9.4/10 on IMDb, and is on many Top 10 Smallville episodes list as number 1 or close to it. I’m sorry you didn’t really get this episode. Like many others have said, it was the 100th episode (something you also missed with the Arrowverse crossover recently, it was Arrow’s 100th episode and therefore was a love letter to the history of Arrow as a whole). You really couldn’t have known how big this episode was, or honestly how much of a juggernaut Smallville was at that time. I mean I still have a stack of VHS tapes my sister would record Smallville on because she never could make it home in time to watch episodes premiere. This show was a rallying point for fans in a drought of superhero shows, and it lasted 10 seasons because of episodes like this. This episode was so heavily marketed, you knew someone was going to die, you knew the show would change forever, and you knew more than ever Clark was wrestling with telling Lana his secret and Lex was getting more and more desperate. I agree with you that the beginning of the episode does put off the “It’s all a dream” vibe, but ask yourself is anyone actually out of character? Clark is finally, actually honest with Lana, which fixes 97% of their problems, and since he’s dreamed about being with Lana for over a decade at that point, he feels like he’s untouchable and on top of the world , and therefore he proposes, and it goes right too. She accepts him, because the Lana we know would, and they are happy. Jonathan wins and Lex loses, not just the race but Lana too, forever. It’s clear from the Lexmas episode how much Lex wants and needs Lana. And so, he snaps, and even though the whole episode felt initially like you can’t trust it, by that point, every character’s arc has reached its apex. A natural journey from the beginning of the show till then. And then it all goes to Hell.

2022-06-15 14:44:59 +0000 UTCI feel bad for all of you who were waiting for this episode/reaction and can support your annoyance at Steven's phone habits and not paying attention, it happened for me this week with the Schitt's Creek episode. Having said that, this episode didn't land for me either. I felt that Jonathan's death should have been more about Jonathan and his relationship to Clark and Martha and not the ever annoying Lana/Clark saga (I have an extreme and irrational dislike for that character-I know) but on re-watches it is always weighed down by this storyline and it doesn't hit as it should. Like I am big cry-baby when it comes to shows and this one doesn't really get me. But I definitely feel for everyone disappointed as this is a big episode.

Instead of just going with the flow and enjoying a phenomenal episode as a viewer, he allows his own expectations of how things happen spoil his watching experience, talking about why would they do this now, or this is so random, FAM the writers know what they are doing, just enjoy it bruv. Bro and as a result of that He was pet-peeving the whole ep, and because of that hes more focused on what he think of as disappoints with the episode than actually fully being engaged in the ep and watching the story unfold. 🤷♂️ Tbh his loss, that ep is ICONIC

We've known for 9 eps now someone will die smh, its literally been looming over us this whole arc, Martha almost died and johnathan almost got his head blown off. Also how is Lana accepting his proposal weird, its been damn near 5 seasons of build up, yes they have barely been dating but the way the show sets it up they are super in love and the only hump they had to get over was this looming secret that clark had that was undeniable at this point, once he revealed that then it was on and poppin, plus they're 18, so dumb choices and all but it def made sense

I've always thought that the death price possibly got passed to her in that possible timeline like it almost did here when she almost got electrocuted and that is why we only see Lana and Chloe in that future and Johnathan is alive and Senator. Thoughts anyone?....

This 100th episode is one that the whole season and in a lot of ways, the whole series has been leading up to. You said there wasn’t enough build up for you but this is the Clark/Lana relationship coming to a head, something since day one. Also Jonathan did die saving Clark in a way. Jonathan’s bad heart is a direct result of when he took on Jor-els powers to rescue Clark when he was on red kryptonite. And this is the culmination of when Jor-el told Clark that if he defied him that someone close to him would die. All of these things have been building up. Clark and Lana’s relationship has been on the rocks because of his secret and has wrestled with telling Lana for a while. So I’ll disagree with you that there wasn’t any build up to this stuff. I felt like there was a lot of build up to everything that harkened. Im not mad at you for feeling differently than I do I just feel bad that this key episode didn’t hit for you like it did for most people. But in my opinion this episode goes down as one of the all time best of the series. It’s really great.

2022-06-15 04:41:19 +0000 UTCI kinda wish we at least had let you know it was the 100th episode last episode. Because the feeling of everything was because it was the 100th so there was a build up. You might have realized big things were happening because it was the 100th instead of thinking it was a dream right off when he was in the fortress if you had known before hand. It was also the mid season finale I think. It was the culmination of loved one dying story line and all the stuff between Clark, Lex, and Lana, and the Election. Yeah I dunno back in 06 when this aired live after having a string of episodes with James Marsters and having the Lexmas episode then sitting down watching the 100th episode and have Clark finally tell Lana, then propose to her, have her die, not know it would be reversed then having time turn back and have Johnathan die like in the films was crazy.

I guess it comes with the job of reacting to tons of shows and taking a week long break. Last episode's main theme was that Lana and Clark were on the path to breaking up as Clark couldn't stop lying to Lana and it was driving them apart. The end of that episode directly sets up that Clark has to do something. That leads to Clark revealing his secret to Lana. In fact this entire season has been building with this idea that not only is Clark lying to Lana but because of those lies, Lana is now lying to Clark and getting too close to Lex. That being said, I also did feel like the beginning was a bit abrupt when I saw the episode for the first time. I thought I was missing a part of the episode when I watched. But I got settled in quickly. I don't know if you read the comments but everyone was hinting at this being the 100th episode so it might have helped knowing that from the start, this was going to be a special episode. The episode within the fans and critics has been praised and lauded. Everyone loves this episode and you truly feel like you don't know whats going to happen. We've been teased for so long that somebody will have to die to equalize the life that was given to clark after he died from being shot. This was that payoff.

Commercials indicated someone would bite the dust by episodes end so when it originally aired it was a guessing game on who. But anyone watching normally now wouldn’t have known this.
