Hey Steven, I am catching up on your reactions and I just watched your Reckoning Deep Dive Review and I agree with you. When I was younger, I enjoyed this episode but I remembered thinking everything was weird. So, re-watching this episode with your reactions, I completely understand your stance. Unforunately that Clana scene was supposed to be so sweet of Clark finally telling Lana the truth but it came off out of character for Clark based on their history of Clark lies. Clark tells Lana the secret and then propose... like let's calm down. Also you were correct about Martha and Jonathan's reaction. If anything Martha's reaction is expected but Jonathan is usually the voice of the "do not tell the secret" society. You are correct in mentioning how much Lana and Lex have been build this season so even with the Clark and Lana moment, it still feels rushed. "What is Lionel here but Lex isn't?" I always found that odd. I know that Lex and Clark are not friends anymore but when did the family become friends with Lionel? I know Martha is civil with him but the family knows how much Jonathan hated Lionel so that didn't make sense. Thanks for breaking down why you disliked the episode. Now off to watch your Vegenance episode. Also I agree that your phone habits is not why you did not like the episode and I am saying this as a person who loved this episode and watched it many times but as I gotten older, realize it's not as great as I initally thought. It's still okay but not the greatest.

2022-06-17 18:06:05 +0000 UTCAs for this episode, Clark was clearly grieving and feeling bad all episode but I liked the lesson that Clark learned in this one. Clark is on a path to becoming the Superman that we know from the comics but he has so much to learn. His dad put him on the path and gave him this base of justice and being a good person. Now Clark has to start learning thing on his own. And this episode is a good start for that. Clark both learned a lesson and was able to get over his anger and grief (at least a little bit) by seeing what vengeance does to a person.

2022-06-17 00:19:49 +0000 UTCAlso, yes, the "Widow's succession" is an actual political practice (I think it only happens in the legislative branch) where widows/widowers take their spouse's seat in office via direct appointment. It usually happens when someone is elected posthumously, but there are dozens of instances of it with congressional seats in the US. Also, heh, I just realized this Andrea/Acrata is the same character Julie Gonzalo played for two seasons on Supergirl. Quite different takes on the character, lol.

So many reactors seem almost afraid to dislike something for fear of turning off viewers, and that's never been you and I love that. I just so happen to agree with you on "Reckoning," but there have been plenty of episodes of this and other shows I haven't agreed with you on and I appreciate it all the same. I love getting different perspectives on shows and movies.

Brilliant episode in my mind and the whole series has been building to this point in the Clark/Lana relationship and for Jonathan’s death.

2022-06-16 19:54:58 +0000 UTCWhen you were saying at the end that the whole episode should have been about his grief I was like not again. The whole thing was about his grief it's about the stages. He was in the Denial and Anger stages which led to the Acceptance which allowed him to finally cry at the end. That is why the end of the last one it was only a couple minutes and he wasn't there yet. This episode gave him time to process the emotions connect with Andrea and Lana who lost their parents and give us a final goodbye with the video at the end. It needed time to breath and play out.

2022-06-16 15:49:46 +0000 UTCits never been clear if lionel knows his secret here. At the time of airing Many people thought he did while others believed he didn't. Remember there were 2 instances in the past (season 2) where clark used his powers in front of Lionel when he was "blind" One in that hostage ep with martha and another when clark was on Red K and shot those bullets into his hand. Not to mention the Transference episode with the body swap which the show was kinda ambiguous about lionels memory post that. There are probably more instances that im forgetting. I think in this episode Lionel was too preoccupied with falling to his death to calculate the speed at which Clark caught up to him imo, same when he just appeared into his office, the woman of vengeance was throttling the life out of him at the time, so i believe lionel didnt really notice the super-speed entrance. just my opinion tho

2022-06-16 12:55:34 +0000 UTCI think one of the best things about Johnathan’s death in Smallville compared to Man of Steel is it was a heart attack, which is not only how it is in the comics but also fits Clark so well that no matter all his abilities and how powerful he is, he can’t save everyone. As for how saving Lana caused Johnathan’s death, in the original timeline where Lana died Johnathan was there so fast because he was already on the way to meet Lionel but Lana’s crash stopped him as he stopped to look after Clark. With no crash with Lana, Johnathan carries his drive on to Lionel. As for this episode: Lionel already knows Clark’s secret, that’s why he isn’t questioning how Clark arrived there so fast or why Clark managed to save him. He found out from that prison bodyswap episode last season I think.

One thing we should all know very well as Smallville fans is that it's hard to agree on anything about this show, and there's always someone who can find ugly things to say about anything in this OG toxic comic book fandom. We also know as fans you've got to keep with it. I'm keeping with you because I enjoy your reactions and observations, not because every single one of your opinions line up with mine. You brought up some good points about last episode that made me pull the rose colored glasses down a little bit. And I enjoyed this one very much, and I'm excited for you to see things to come.

2022-06-16 05:02:11 +0000 UTCI was going to post on Reckoning, but so many people were tearing you down Steven for not liking this, and it was late last night, so I didn't get to respond till tonight. You are not alone in how you feel about this episode. I watched this episode with all the build-up and hype and it still hit me just as it did for you. It's not that great of an episode. For me, it falls so flat on Jonathan's death. There's no time with Jonathan and Clark at any point in the episode to build up this death, and very little time spent after his death. In fact there's a deleted scene directly after his death, where Clark took Jonathan's body to the Fortress and he plead with Jor-El to bring him back and Jor-El refused. To this day I cannot for the life of me figure out why they didn't include that scene. You can watch it online, but it's unfinished and doesn't include Jor-El's responses to Clark, but to me that is so much more powerful than the funeral itself. It shows the bargaining stage of grief and Clark begging to Jor-El that he can't do anything without Jonathan, and when he refuses Clark tells Jor-El that Jonathan will be the only father he'll ever have and then Clark apologizes to Jonathan's lifeless body for what's happened. 2022-06-16 03:53:16 +0000 UTCThe "bye bye" from Johnathan at the end really kind of seals Johnathan's death for me. Its a really well done moment which kind of answers your concerns of the death just happening at the end of the last episode. In the context of how the show premiered, people got to sit with the death for a week, process it, and then finally say goodbye this episode. It sucks you didn't enjoy the 100th that much but here's to hoping you liked the 200th. Hopefully you like some of other episodes of the season as well. I think at this point the Clark/Lana stuff was starting to not be as enjoyable. It's crazy that they finally got together at the start of season 5 but in just half a season things aren't working as well.
