The witch gene was passed down to the Mikaelson kids, but they were turned into vampires and you can't be both (though Kol did tell Davina that he was the only one that tapped into his witch side before he had turned). They never talked about the golden dagger like it was something that can kill Klaus. When Kol asked Marcel for the diamond to help create it earlier in the season, he said the dagger wouldn't kill Klaus. It works like a regular dagger would on his siblings, but they had to make a special one for Klaus because of his werewolf side. Only white oak can kill an original.
