As much as I didn’t want them to get together at first, this is what finally gives them closure. They are no longer each other’s fall back or possibility. They can both move on.

EXACTLY! Very well put.

ok so I always saw this as Lorelai always had Christopher in the back of her head as the "what if"-possibility, meaning their timing never worked, but that if their timing was right, he would be the one for her. And now the timing was right, they were both single and ready for a real comittment. But Lorelai finally saw that the timing wasn't the issue, they were just not meant to be bc she doesn't love him enough. Plus ofc Lorelai came straight from this disappointment with Luke who just didn't commit enough towards the end. And Lorelai was finally ready to commit. So she jumped towards this marriage with Christopher more bc she wanted to be married, just not to Christopher. Luke was the only guy she ever loved and wanted to commit to at the same time. And Christopher picked up on all this and reacted in the shittiest way possible. That's why I love Lorelai finally being able to end this Christopher chapter for good, bc it's no longer "what if", it just wasn't meant to be.

This might come out a little long winded but now that I think about all the relationships that Lorelai has had in the past I think I have a theory. I think that subconsciously in the back of Lorelai's mind every time she got into a new relationship, with the exception of Luke, she wasn't thinking about whether or not this guy would make her happy she was thinking how will this guy fit in my parents world because to her parents for a guy to be worthy of dating Lorelai they have to either come from a high status family or be in a high status profession. Other then Luke the only person that I can think of that didn't exactly meet those requirements would be Max but the fact that he was a teacher helped him because although a teacher might not be the most high status job in the world according to Richard and Emily it is still a respectable profession which means she knows that other then the fact that he was Rory's teacher Lorelai knew she would get very little pushback from her parents if she married Max. Its kind of similar to what happened to Lane when she and Zak were dating and she said she had to wait until she was married to have sex like she said nothing else her mother tried to instill in her stuck but this one issue for Lorelai nothing her parents tried to instill in her stuck but this the type of guy she looked for to date and/or marry. And if you look at all of her most notable past relationships it checks out first there was Max who at least had a respectable career then there was Jason who had not only a good career but also had the family status, and then with Christopher even though he wasn't always the most reliable person when it came to work or helping raise Rory he at least also had the family status. With all of these relationships it came down to she just didn't love them because she wasn't seeking someone that she could love she was seeking someone her parents would approve of. I think Luke was the first guy that Lorelai truly dated for her and not because she knew her parents would approve of him and taking that out of the mix she was able to find someone she truly fell in love with. And even more to the point look what happened when Lorelai did have a relationship with someone because she had real feelings for them and not because she thought in the back of her mind her parents would approve of them Emily and Richard, but mostly Emily, meddled in the relationship and they broke up for a while. I think that is the reason she dated the guys that she did because she was afraid of actually falling in love with someone and then her parents turn around and do something to ruin it because he's not the kind of guy they want for her which I think is also why I think it took so long for Lorelai to act on the feelings that she has had stiring for Luke since, in my opinion, season 1. So at the end of the day it all just boils down to she just didn't love Chris. Anyways that's just my 2 cents rant over lol.

I think basically what it came down to, was Chris never being who she actually wanted, she was vulnerable, wanting to be married and having that life, and Chris was there to offer it to her when she needed it most. She thought it was just Luke that was keeping her from fully being in, but she figured out that even if Luke didn’t exist, Chris is not the one for her. She wanted chris to be one so badly, he’s Rory’s father, someone her parents wanted, her dream family. But now that she had him, it just didn’t fit, it’s like wearing your shoes on the wrong side, just didn’t feel right.
