People are SUPER weird about shipping these days. Just like at the beginning of Buffy when she first said Angel/Buffy was interesting. People gaslighted her into thinking she was terrible because of their age difference. Then people do the same with Spike/Buffy. Heck, plenty of the writers actually shipped Buffy/Spike. For me, it's like...it's just fantasy people. It's fun. Let people ship relationships...even if they would be considered "bad" or "inappropriate" in the real world. This isn't the real world...it's fantasy. I always think it's funny when people get in a moral outrage about it yet I bet those same people are completely find with people getting shot/killed in action movies. The moral panic over romance is messed up sometimes. I do think it might be a GenZ thing, but maybe I'm wrong. Feel free to correct me if I am.
