2022-09-30 06:46:45 +0000 UTCSo quickly these girls have forgotten that they'd have been dead many weeks ago already if it weren't for Buffy. Like yeah, people are dying. It sucks and it's scary. Welcome to the apocalypse. You're on the front lines. You can't just stay at home and hope it blows over, lol. Especially when it has already targeted you, specifically. I don't fault them for standing up for themselves, but Buffy was offering to strategize WITH them, and they just weren't hearing it. She was right - they DO need to get to whatever Caleb & the Bringers are protecting. They don't know how long they have before it's game over, so the whole "let's just leave it for later and take a few days off" thing doesn't really hold water when we're talking the end of the world. They just don't want to be in the fight, is what it comes down to. But they don't have a choice - they are in it. The fight came to them. Buffy can't defeat The First by herself, especially if she has to protect all of them at the same time. They have to fight for themselves, which is what they've been training for. Buffy could've been more tactful in how she approached it, but that's what she was trying to get across. Kicking her out of her own house and all the righteous indignation on display in that scene was just a bridge way too damn far for me. I always skip this one on rewatches too, because it feels like with the especially blunt way they wrote Buffy in that scene, they wanted us to be Team Potentials, and I just can't, lol.

No way would she go back without Spike for a start, so OBVIOUSLY there would have been a planning period before the attack, knowing now what they know about Caleb. But they didn't let her get that far before the group turned on her.

2022-08-03 01:32:25 +0000 UTCShe's always had to make the final decision over the group. She is THE SLAYER. It's her who makes the hard calls, every season. Season 5 finale esp when Giles and co. wanted to kill Dawn. She was as much a general then as she is now. And sure, maybe she's never been *this* hardcore before. But it is a LOT different running a group of family/friends with valuable input than a huge, reckless group of arrogant, powerless teenagers with less field experience than a single one of the certified scoobies. Even Dawn. They have next to no hand-to-hand combat experience outside of spike training, so the vineyard was their first real battle in this war. Buffy had NO WAY of knowing Caleb was superhuman. She thought the girls would be dealing mostly with Bringers. And ALL of the scoobies, Xander included, were VERY much aware of the risk of their chosen life. Each and every one of them has had the opportunity to bow out at any time, but they just love playing superhero under the condition that none of them get injured. It doesn't work that way! Buffy has literally given up her life TWICE, and she killed her first great love without dumping blame on any of her friends. She stuck by them and did the right thing. Despite Angel's death in season 2 being preventable if Xander hadn't done the whole "kick his ass" thing. Speaking of Xander, he gets seriously hurt ONCE in seven years, and suddenly Anya, Willow, Giles, even Dawn no longer believes in Buffy because it was "her fault" Xander lost his eye. It wasn't. It was a casualty of a war he signed on for. Same with the potentials that died. I fully agree Buffy made a mistake in the way she conducted that conversation. The potentials should never have been consulted. The core group and faith should have been the ONLY ones in that room so that Buffy could explain herself. Instead, they all ganged up and attacked her before she got the chance. Willow has killed people. Anya has killed people. Xander summoned a dancing demon that killed people (something he's shown no sense of guilt over btw.) Giles has killed people. Faith has killed people. The audacity of them ALL to be looking down at Buffy for a genuine mistake is ASTOUNDING.

Every rewatch and as time goes by, I try and be more understanding and charitable towards Kennedy. I tell myself she is young, she's not that bad....but then this episode rolls around and I am like shut the F***. She is a waste of space. Worst addition to the cast ever...even worse than the anointed one ;P

He knows what it's like not being chosen. When Caleb was putting out his eye, he told Xander "so you're the guy who sees". Great callback.

She explained why they have to go back, and she isn't being reckless, she did say she wanted to hear suggestions and make a plan. The last time Caleb caught them by surprise, they didn't expect all that. I mean they are fighting a WAR, and they can't just sit around and wait, they have to take risks to get that break and turn the tide to gain some sort of advantage that gives them at least a fighting chance. So yeah, some arguments were sound, but some of them were uncalled for. And kicking her out? I'm not even touching that one...

Buffy made a mistake last time and her new plan is to do the exact same thing cuz of a theory she has. All Faith was asking was for a little proof that something was there that way if someone dies in battle it’s not for no reason. What I wish they would of did was have Caleb say that the hellmouth is opening in 24 hours or something that way she has a very reason to rush into that plan

I don't really agree that she should ask their opinions...at least not the kids. They have zero experience. Buffy took a calculated risk because she was trying to teach them. She never imagined running into someone as strong as Caleb. She HAD to get them out there in battle at some point...otherwise...what's the point? Also, the weight of all this is on her shoulders. They get to all complain and she has to carry it. Honestly, I thought it sucked that her friends didn't have her back. Mainly because they've seen Buffy struggle and they've seen her overcome it all again and again. To then abandon her because of this...that's more than a betrayal imo.

It does seem pretty crazy that these useless potentials would kick Buffy out of her own damn house. She pays the rent, they can all leave. And it feels very out of character for Giles, Willow, and Xander to not trust Buffy in times of crisis

On the other side they should of just explained that because of the results of the last battle they needed a strong reason to go back in they’re without attacking her

2022-08-02 02:30:37 +0000 UTCThis episode will never not infuriate me. It destroyed my opinions of central characters, mainly Anya. She took such a shot at Buffy for trying to lead while doing basically nothing to contribute, except speaking to old contacts. Her whole thing of how Buffy and her aren't friends in an earlier episode (after four years of working side by side. Even making Buffy a bridesmaid at her wedding etc.) and now the "you didn't earn it" when Buffy has literally died TWICE to save the world. Not to mention the "You're not better than us, you're luckier than us." This coming from a woman who chose to be a demon twice, has killed countless people in her time without remorse, and is part of the reason the first even has power to begin with (that goes for the entire gang tbh), telling a woman who has saved literally everyone, that she's not better than her. Buffy is better than Anya in every way. I just can't with her. Dawn also. A deep betrayal. Sorry for the rant lmao, but this episode IRKS me to no end.
